- Does she have AIHA or a tick disease?
Hi everyone, I have been reading the topics on your forum for the past three months. I’m at my wit’s end and don’t know where to turn. It seems that my dog is dying and I’m not sure her AIHA diagnosis was correct. If anyone can help with ideas or advice ASAP, it would be much appreciated. Let me start at the beginning.
In the middle of August 2017 the dog presented with sever anemia with PCV of 20. We took her to Blue Pearl where she underwent diagnostic tests, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound (enlarged spleen), blood tests. Here are the results:
SuperChem
Albumin: 2.6 (LOW)
A&G: 0.7 (LOW)
ALT(SGPT): 145 (HIGH)
Alk Phosphatase: 231 (HIGH)
Total Bilirubin: 0.4 (HIGH)
BUN/Creatine Ratio: 35 (HIGH)
Calcium: 8.7 (LOW)
PrecisionPSL: 241 (HIGH)
Protein 1+ (HIGH) In
Bilirubin: 2+ (HIGH)
Blood: Trace (HIGH)
Casts: Present
Complete Blood Count
RBC 2.1 (LOW)
HGB 5.4 (LOW)
HCT 17 (LOW)
MCV 82 (HIGH)
NRBC 14 (HIGH)
Platelet Count 76 (LOW)
She was put on Prednisone (20) and nothing else. Initially she responded very well, she was perfect except for the hunger, drinking and peeing. PCV 35 after one week, PCV 45 after a couple of weeks.
When we tried to taper the pred and her PCV declined to 38, the vet took her back to 20.
She moved from Michigan to Florida (my mom is a snowbird) and started seeing two more vets (one traditional, one holistic.)
She started bleeding from the vulva, but she has been fixed for 11 years. Her initial ultrasound in August didn’t note anything about her uterus. The traditional vet puts her on 10 days of antibiotics & atopica. The holistic vet increases her pred to 30 and gives her Chinese herbs for bleeding. The dog starts to throw up and have diarrhea, assuming from atopica.
We take her off atopica and she stops throwing up and diarrhea. We continue the antibiotic and Chinese herbs. She keeps bleeding and at the end of her 10 days of antibiotics she starts diarrhea and throwing up, she can barely stand up.
Something to note, two months before her AIHA diagnosis a tick was taken off of her. So, we are wondering is she was misdiagnosed. She is in bad shape and no one knows what’s wrong with her. If anyone has ideas PLEASE help!
