Hi Mary
Sorry for late reply! Yes – have hunted around for a dropped pill many times – it’s too scary to think they might find them & eat them. I think the main point this vet wanted to make was that creams & potions containing these drugs that humans put on their skin/body directly for pain can be licked off by cats (or dogs). It made me think of zinc oxide cream as well – that would be poisonous to them too.
My notorious old border collie, Sprockett, once ate my make-up bag. In it were my contraceptive pills, lipstick, kohl pencil, mascara. When I phoned the vet, he said don’t worry as long as he doesn’t take them every day!!!!! I knew that he was making a joke & laughed at the time. But I know now that these pills could have caused IMHA in a dog – thankfully it didn’t in his case. He had some very interesting coloured poo the next day – pink from the lipstick & blue from the eye make-up!!! He really was a little sod, but we loved him just the same.

Hi Cindy
Poor Abby’s paw sounds very sore, bless her. That may explain why her neutrophils are still a bit high on the latest test I saw, plus her feeling a bit under the weather too. The doxycycline should clear this up hopefully. If it doesn’t, they should really take a sample & find out exactly what it is to be able to tell which antibiotic is effective to use. I know you will watch her closely in the meantime too!
I agree with Mary – don’t start any reductions – please trust us on this – until Abby has a couple of normal level blood tests – it’s not worth the risk.
Cindy – she really is doing so well – I am really pleased she’s coming up nicely on the PCV front. Remember, some dogs come up faster than others.
Love & hugs

Hiya Trish
Thanks very much for Max’s latest blood tests. We can see why your vet suspected an infection on the earlier one, but all is well on the latest test. It is absolutely excellent!!!! Well done, both of you. The MCV & MCHC figures are usually out of range for a while when dogs are recovering from anaemia, so nothing to worry about. Eosinophils are sometimes not seen at all, & this lightly high value on the latest test is also nothing to worry about. Could be the pred? Maybe. Probably nothing.
I noticed Max’s liver enzymes were slightly high, so continuing with the milk thistle as we suggested will help. I also saw at the bottom that they had looked at his blood on a slide & found no clotting risks – yippeee!!!!! He did have rouleaux (& something they didn’t expand on about platelets) on the first tests, so they were wise to give him the plavix – essential actually. So he doesn’t need it now he’s recovering so well.
I am sooooo pleased for you & Max – this is great news!!!

PS e-mailed this to you as well
Hey Cindy
Thank you for updating us. I’m so pleased to know Abby is doing well. Hopefully the antibiotics will take care of the infection in her paw. She is bound to be tired for a while, since her PCV is still not in the normal range (but doing very well!) and the meds can make them feel lethargic. Keep a close eye on her though, as I know you will.
All best wishes,
Mary and Mable x
interesting too that it notes that pills are sometimes sugar coated. I recently dropped a tiny sugar coated hormone pill, and was desperately hunting for it. A visitor thought I was nuts, but I said Mable might eat it due to the sugar coating and it is a pill known to cause anemia if ingested by cats! Visitor still thought I was nuts but this article makes me think maybe I’m not! Found the pill before Mable could inhale it :)
