Hi Stacey,
Wow congrats to Zorro and You ! That’s such awesome news !!! I know how you feel as my Flossie has been off all meds for 6 weeks now and she’s doing really well and I am over the moon happy.
Flossie was diagnosed with Pyoderma too. It’s a side effect of the immunosuppressants from my understanding especially the Atopic ( cyclosporine) which she was on. We have 2 vets the internalist and our every day vet. Internalist said shampoo wouldn’t work needed antibiotic and our everyday vet didn’t want to give any oral meds or anitbiotics she wanted us to just use the chlorahexadine shampoo. And we agreed..with her on this particular occasion but it took a lot longer than anticipated for it to work. The shampoo was initially for 2 weeks but in the end it took 4 weeks before she cleared up for about 3 weeks. Then it came back and it took a few shampooings and it was gone again. Then she went off the cyclosporine all together .. she cleared up for 3 weeks and broke out with 4 sores.. cleared those up in 1 shampooing and now she has 1 sore. All that to say we went and read about all these meds and how they build up in the skin and it takes time for them to make their way out , basicly for the dog to detox off the meds. The further Flossie go’s being off meds it seems we are seeing less break out. So In your case I might give it some more time and just stick with the shampoo if at all possible.
I also have flossie on Sam-E and Milk Thistle which are both liver detoxifires. That combination is also known as Denamerin in doggie meds. I just use the human form and dose according to weight. Detoxifying the liver helps to rid the the body of all the toxicity from the meds as well as anything they pick up environmentally. You may already know this or are currently doing this so if so just dismiss.
Lastly besides treating Flossie with the shampoo .. I also treat any individual sores with coconut oil, just rub some in my hands and rub on sore .. then blot off extra with tissue. Then if she is itching I rub in a tiny bit of over the counter cortisone itch cream I get from Wal Mart. That seems to work beautifully for her. I do this in the morning and evening.
If it was me deciding for Flossie I would continue with shampoo and forego med. Until there was no other option.
Hugs from Sara and Flossie
Stacy,
I like Sara’s idea. A few people have had issues with NexGard and if it were me, I wouldn’t risk it.

Thank you both, Sara and Vally!
I’ve decided not to use NexGard. I’ll keep trying the shampoo! :)
Stacey & Zorro
Hi Stacey– what a scary journey you have been on with Zorro. He certainly is a trooper as are you. My Charlie was diagnosed in October, and only over the last few weeks have we seen his PCV numbers get out of the 20 something zone. Hang in there and keep doing what you’re doing.
We too live in Southern California. There’s a dog food company out here called Just Food For Dogs. It’s real human grade food cooked and then frozen for dogs. Because we had an online consult with Dr. Dodds and she recommended a white fish, russet/sweet potato diet to help detoxify Charlie’s liver from all the drugs, I started ordering food from this company. They have a white fish russet/sweet potato recipe. Of course you can make the food yourself, which I tried but it was very time consuming. This company does all the work for you and will ship it to your home packed in dry ice. Not sure if it was the food, but after we started ordering it, Charlie’s appetite improved and he finally started to stablize. There’s a website if you’re interested. Sorry I can’t paste a link–I’m not very tech savvy.
We wish you and Zorro continued progress! Sincerely Charlie & Ramona
