Stacey, muscle wasting is very common as I’m sure you know. With the dex being reduced, Zorro will recover. You’re doing great to keep an eye on the tests and going back in a week is the best safety measure.
The high platelets could also be due to the sample taken. The machines can often mis-count red cells as platelets too.
Zorro is sounding good. No more tummy trouble I hope, it I’m not asking this time or he’ll feel the need to scare you again.

Zorro has been recovering very nicely! His PCV has been at 50 for weeks now (although it dropped to 45 today but the doctor said not to worry…) He’s now at 25mg of Atopica every other day and 0.25mg of Dexamethosone daily.
He’s developed a terrible pyoderma and that might be from the chronic use of glucocorticoids :( The doctor wants to give him antibiotics but I’m worried about the consequence of giving him more drugs. Anyone has experienced similar problems from long term use of glucocorticoids??
Thanks!
Stacey & Zorro
Stacey, that’s great news. A PCV of 45 is excellent. Remember anything normal means NORMAL. Whenever Bingo got a high result I’d always be dubious and always expected the next result to be lower. Remember too hydration affects results. More hydrated lower PCV. Less hydrated higher PCV.
The skin condition, I’m wondering if it could be a staph infection

If you search the forum, you’ll see there have been heaps of posts about this.

Hi Vally,
Sorry for the late reply! Just found your reply in my junk mailbox, and thank you!
Yes looks totally like staph. I think the underlying cause was mites (because I was itchy too!). Now that the mites are gone, he’s left with pyoderma (staph) and smelly! The doctor didn’t test him but prescribe Cefpodoxime. I don’t feel comfortable giving him this type of antibiotics and also potentially upset his stomach (he’s sensitive)… I’m going to try topical treatment and shampoo and hope the infection will go away.
Seems like most dogs get this while their on high dose of steroids. Zorro is on 25mg of Atopica every other day and 0.25mg of Dexamethosone daily. Hopefully we can get off the meds soon and his immune system will get stronger!

Hi Stacey .. I’m Sara and my sweet Girl Flossie has AIHA .. we are just over 9 months from first diagnosis.
First off sounds like you are really on top of things and doing a lot of good for your sweet Zorro. Also sounds like your vet has reached for the right meds and choices with blood transfusions. My girl ended up with 4 blood transfusions and was non-regenerative until week 5.
As far as reaching the 30’s we didn’t hit the 30’s with Flossie until the late 3 month mark. I believe I’m correct in saying that all dogs react differently though ( Valley and Sheena can correct me here) I think it just all depends on how quickly the body responds and makes all those baby RBC’s . My Flossie was a slow go and as I said they were giving up hope in week 4 because she showed non-regenerative and wanted to do the bone marrow asperate. However we opted for adding another drug and within a week of adding another drug she became regenerative.
As for taking Zorro to work .. I think as long as you are able to keep her calm and quiet. My Vet …and I think the girls here will tell you that rest is really good for them with this disease. Too much exertion and they can relapse or so my vet said. You have to remember they are Anemic which means the body is very tired and weak even if they don’t show it like us humans do.Also you want to be certain the other dogs are healthy and coming from healthy environments with Zorro’s immune systems so compromised virtually shut down from the immunosuppressants she has no way to fend off illness. So just be super cautious ..you’ve already gone to so much trouble to save Zorro and give her such amazing care that you wouldn’t want to compromise all you have done.
I’m so glad that Zorro is responding to treatment and that she has someone so loving and willing to care for her .
BTW .. if the Denamirin gets too costly you can do Sam-E and Milk Thistle. That’s what I did .. Flossie got 1- 400 mg tablet of Sam-e per day and 300 mg of milk thistle twice a day when on all meds. She was a weight of between 55 and 62 lbs and this is what our internal medicine specialist prescribed. I just bought both the milk thistle and the sam-e via Vita Cost online .. very reasonable on Vits and supplements here in US.
Lastly .. Flossie is as I said 9 months out and she was just taken off her last med approx 4 weeks ago. Her first blood test at the 2 week mark her hematacrete was 47 we go in tomorrow for another blood test and I think it will be good she’s beautifully red in gums, eating like a horse and super playful. So all that to say there is hope, dogs do survive this disease it takes a lot of dedication on our parts but they can make it.
Take Care and saying a prayer for you and sweet Zorro !
Hi Stacey now in reply to your last message.. it only showed me I guess the first page and nothing else and my above response is to an old post.
Flossie fought Pyoderma for the last 2 months .. Vet prescribed Chlorohexadine shampoo. And a bath in it every other day for 2 weeks .. we did that saw results but it didn’t take it away completely .. so we continued for another 3 weeks and finally it was gone. The only med she was on at that point was the cyclosporine and it does say that can be a side effect. Well as we were slowly taking her off the cyclo she got it again .. or possibly we only thought we got it to begin with .. anyhow another round of shampooing and she is now off all meds no cyclo and we haven’t seen any pyoderma come back in 4 weeks .. so far so good .. However for precautions sake I still give her a bath 1 every 10 days in the chlorahexadine shampoo knowing that her body is going to detox from the meds for sometime until they are clearly out of her body. I’m not sure if the meds are stored in body fat etc .. but I’m sure it takes a while to see those meds completely gone. Our vet talked to us about an antibiotic but she really wanted to see if the shampoo would work as she didn’t want her on more meds .. so we were very happy with that and seems the shampooing worked just took longer than anticipated.
If I could also recommend as you are raw feeding chewy and stellas as I was reading .. If you can find at your local natural market Goats Milk Kefir no added sugars .. plain flavor .. this is an excellent probiotic for your dog .. just 1 tablespoon twice daily and it helps heal and boost gut health.
Sorry for the above post that referenced an old post ..I would delete it but am unable..
Kindest Regards .Sara
Hi Sara,
No worries! Thank you for your reply! :)
Yes you are totally correct, every dog is different. Zorro was diagnosed in late September with PCV 8% when he checked into the hospital. Even though he had a few scary moments and almost died, but by late October his PCV was 34% and had a weekly 10% increase, so he’s been around 50% for almost 2 months now.
The only thing with him is that his stomach often gets upset. We think it’s from Cyclosporine, so he was on Metronidazole for a long time. We took him off raw diet and plain yogurt in case he was lactose intolerant, and I started giving him canned food. He still had diarrhea as soon as I took him off Metronidazole, which happens to help with IBS. I recent switched his diet to The Honest Kitchen fish. He seems to be doing well and without Metronidazole. Maybe it’s also because of lower dosage of Cyclosporine. I guess we’ll never know! I also give him probiotics and digestive enzymes with his food. Zorro has a very high maintenance lifestyle my husband said :P
Yes I’m going to try the Chlorohexadine shampoo and several other sprays and keep a close eye on him. Hopefully pyoderma will go away soon because he really stinks and I’m embarrassed to bring him to work lol :)
Stacey & Zorro
It’s been almost 4 months since Zorro’s first AIHA diagnosis, he’s now only on Dexamethasone!! Woohoo! His CBC looked good, the doc said his red cell counts were a bit lower than normal so we’re retesting in 2 weeks, if all looks good, we’re reducing the dosage to every other week.
Had a trip to the dermatologist today finally, and Zorro indeeds has pyoderma. The doc said to continue using the shampoo that has Chlorohexadine. Since I have itchy bumps on me too, even though the doc still couldn’t find mites (30% of finding it under the microscope even if he has it), the doc wants to give him NexGard (afoxolaner) to kill the mites. This is prescription strength, 68 mg per tablet for dogs between 24.1-60.0 lbs. The thought of giving him such strong insecticide troubles me. Zorro is only 29 lbs. I wonder if I can give him half?
Any one has any thoughts on NexGard? He is recovering so well with his AIHA condition, I just don’t want to risk it.. :(
