- Worzel check-up
Hi everyone
Worzel’s blood test was brilliant – greyhound levels again HCT 63.3, Hgb 18.4, RBC 8.78, so I’m a very happy (crazy, paranoid) lady. And, yes, I did wash both the dog’s feet with chlorhexadine & put the duvet on a boil wash when I got home. Absolutely everything else was normal – that makes a nice change! His thyroid is fine (many thanks Vally for prompting me to check it out) & the vet has no real answer for the darkening of the skin – we are just guessing it’s still the after effects of the pred. He thinks some of the little lumps are sebaceous cysts (the softer ones) & some are calcinosis cutis, and is not at all concerned. Worzel couldn’t care less either.
Ollie had his rabies vaccination, so I will be watching him like a hawk.
The vet (my favourite) was telling me they had another case of IMHA recently at the Specialists in Bordeaux. He didn’t understand what I was asking when I questioned him about whether it was a bone marrow problem or if it was intravascular (my rubbish French), so I’m not sure. It was idiopathic though. Apparently, she (Heinz 57) was started on azathioprine which worked well for the first couple of months, but then it started to over-suppress the bone marrow, so they switched to cyclosporine instead & she is still doing really well – great news! I might find out more from the Specialist when I send him Worzel’s latest results.
Love to all of you – you are such great friends – & give your lovely pups a cuddle from me.
Sheena, Ollie & Worzel
Hi Sheena
Wonderful news about the lovely Worzel! I’m so pleased and it has been good news all round here today
Hmm. Not sure what happened here as I typed up a longer reply than that ^^^ on iPhone and it’s disappeared! Nevermind.
Mable says well done Worzel! (and Ollie of course). Mable’s next jabs are due in September, so we’ll cross that anxiety-provoking bridge later in the year. Today it is 4 months since Molly died and so it is really nice to hear good news from others, especially today.
I’m not quite sure how one would tackle intra-vascular vs. bone marrow IMHA in French. I can barely remember how to ask for an ice-cream…..But excellent to hear that the other local IMHA dog is doing well :)
What’s the idea behind the chlorhexidine paws and boiling duvets? Mable is hiding as we speak.
I’m delighted to hear your news and that the vet has no concerns about Worzel. You and Phil must be over the moon.
Much love, the M’s x
Hi Mary!
Thank you for your lovely message. I probably am daft. I can’t be too careful as Worzel won’t be having any vaccinations ever again. The chlorhexadine is to kill off anything he might have picked up on his feet at the vets (especially parvovirus which can be spread that way) & Ollie has to comply too! The duvet they lie on in the car gets boiled up just in case as well. It’s just part of my crazy, paranoid world of IMHA & I hope everyone gets a good laugh at my antics!
On a sadder note, I’m sorry this has come on the 4 month anniversary since Molly died. You must be feeling very sore still & you know I wish it had been better news for you & Molly. Give her beautiful sister Mable an extra-special cuddle from all of us here & take care of yourself too.
Sheena & Co
Hi Sheena
Thanks for your kind words. It is a bit of a sad day BUT I can think of no better way to spend it than hearing that Worzel and Bingo are doing so well! I have just had a natter with Mable whose tummy is looking noticeably chunky. The vets will just have to understand that having a slightly fat cat is a continual blessed relief!
She would like to send a nudge nudge, wink wink to the boys, both about the size of her tummy, and about their day at the vets.
You aren’t paranoid at all and I can totally understand now that you explained about the chlorhexidine and boil washing. I hadn’t thought of that, as I suppose cats are usually in baskets. Although, it’s a good point from when they have been out on the bench. I always keep a bottle of hibiscrub at home as I know it’s safe to use on cats. Mabes might have to put up with washed paws after future visits!
Anyway, I really am thrilled to hear your news (And Vally’s).
Lots of love, M & M x
Sheena, I’m thrilled that your HOT vet came back with great news. Talk about paranoid – me that is. I was actually thinking was Bingo’s good news going to jinx Worzel so I was quite worried. How seriously weird are we – you and your feet washing. I’ll bet Worzel just loves having his feet bathed in chlorhexadine (no idea what that is but I’ll just bet it smells like roses) and all his favourite smells boiled out of his duvet.
Mary I’m glad to read we were able to help you through your day with our good results. Give Mable’s volumptuous (not chunky!) tummy a rub for me.
Love of love Vally & Bingo.
Hi Sheena!
we are all so happy about the good news! No you are not paranoid, to do some (to other people) strange things, just comes with the territory of having an AIHA dog. I actually like the idea of cleaning the dogs paws after a vet visit:) I know our vet is pretty meticulous, cleaning the rooms after every visit, but I am sure your precaution can not hurt. The thing is, I am not sure if it would have to be done before you even get in the car? did you do that? With all these great results you can take a sigh of relief and give yourself a pat on the back. Great job Sheena, congratulations!
Brigitte & the poodle boys
Hello Sheena. Wonderful news!!! I am so dog-gone happy for you Worzel – way to make your mommy (and daddy) smile!! Ollie – you be well okay?! Okay.
I am laughing at (well, with) ALL of you! You know – we’re paranoid because of love, right?!
I thought of you tonight Sheena. I had my greyhound friends here with a new greyhound that just came from the dog track kennel (retirement – he’s four) and is going into foster care until adoption. They use my stairs to acquaint their rescue/adoptive pups – can you imagine – never, ever seeing a stairway?! Eclipse is beautiful and Sadie adored him coming to see her (he did perfect on the stairs!). They are the most gracious of dogs and the sweetest, dearest disposition. Donna and Joann always ask about Worzel – so now I will have extra awesome news to tell them!!
And about the “boiling” and feet washing – I have been washing Sadie’s feet for the last few weeks due to pollen. She actually likes it and the towel drying afterward – a mini ‘petacure’ – ;)
Love and hugs to Mr. Clean Feet Worzel and Outrageously Darling Ollie ,
Linda and Sadie
