- Update on Koda
He’s finally responding to the antibiotics and is much stronger now. He no longer slips and falls. It’s so nice to see him spring up from the surfaces that he couldn’t manage before. We are finally weaning off the pred and are at 2.5mg every other day. He’s at about 80% his old self and this may be his new normal. He had such a rough road. A lot of wasted time. :( I feel like I failed him sometimes.
He sleeps most of the day but we get a walk in to work his muscles.
Full panel bloodwork results due in tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed the infection is gone and his liver and kidney values are ok. He’s still slightly anemic but his hct is in the 30s now. Things seem to be moving in the right direction. I pray for continued good news tomorrow. Learned a lot about renal failure and nursing him accordingly.
I hope everyone is doing well. :)

Terri, you and Koda have fought an amazing battle. Don’t you dare think you have failed him in any way at all. I think you have had one of the hardest battles.
I’m glad he’s feeling better in himself and crossing everything that you get great results tomorrow.

Hi Terri
You certainly haven’t let Koda down at all – thanks to your determination to find out what was the matter, he is getting the right treatment & is getting better. It sounds like he is regaining his strength which is wonderful news. Good luck with the blood test results – we will be thinking of you.

Hi everyone,
Remember us? Thought I’d share a quick update. Koda was slowly improving up until last week when we did a full panel and saw that his HCT went from 38 to 31 in a month his Crea is 2 and BUN 38. He seems to be sliding back downhill based on the numbers but he is still eating well and has a positive attitude.
Koda’s case is driving my vet nuts. Along with that he has developed dohle bodies. Toxic neutrophils. I don’t know much about that except that it’s not good and it worries me a lot. What in the world is poisoning my dog?
She started him back on Minocycline and ciprofloxacin yesterday and we will recheck CBC in a week. If it’s no better, he will probably go back on Prednisone.
Prayers appreciated always.
Hope everyone is well and thanks for doing what you do. You help so many folks through your knowledge…bless you all.

Hi Terri
Dohle bodies are commonly seen with acute inflammation from infectious or non-infectious causes. They are also seen when the bone marrow is producing a lot of neutrophils in response to inflammation, so they are not really developing properly into “normal neutrophils. “Toxic neutrophils” makes them sound more scary than is necessarily the case. Think of them as more “abnormal” – not quite so scary that way. In healthy cats, they are often seen. Try not to think of “toxic” as poisonous. What does your vet say? I presume they think it’s an infection from the antibiotics being given?
Read this explanation – it will make you feel happier:

And you can ask your vet if they also saw the “cytoplasmic vacuolization”. Infection is by far the most likely thing. Beat the infection & Koda will be feeling much better soon!
