- Suspected IMHA for Macy and waiting on official blood work results
Update for Macy: So a week ago (last Friday) I took Macy in for a check before the weekend and she was still at 14 PCV. Over the weekend she got worse so I kept her quiet and then took her in Monday morning to my vet. She had fallen down to PCV of 8. We started her on Aza and ended up overnighting some PRBC from the blood bank (local emergency pet facility was out of blood) and did a transfusion Tuesday morning. She tested at 29 right after the transfusion and I brought her home. She was somewhat puny and still pretty tired on Wednesday (me too, it’s been a long week) and then yesterday she started doing better. Today she seems like she’s even a little stronger so I will wait and take her Monday for a PCV check, like the vet had originally suggested. If I felt she wasn’t doing well, I would take her in today just to see where we’re at, but she gets super stressed riding in cars and going to the vet so we will do that Monday. I will update after that trip and see where we are then but for the moment she’s doing great.
Doing as well as can be expected. We went to the vet this morning and Macy’s PCV was 24.5 and she’s gained back a pound of the three she had lost. Her belly and gums have turned back pink and for now we will continue with how we have been going and go back next week for another check.
So I took Macy back in this past Monday for another check and she is doing well. Her PCV had gone from 24.5 to 32.5 (first time it’s gone up besides transfusion) and platelets had also gone up to within normal range, while her WBC dropped from 42 last week down to 23. We go back again in two weeks, so May 30th, for her next check. She is doing great and acting more like her old self every day. Her liver blood work was out of range and I am giving her supplements to try and help with that but the vet said it was about what he expected with the meds she is on. All of the other chem panel was fine and within normal range.
That’s great news Lynette! Keep doing what you’re doing, you too Macy! All the best–Ramona & Charlie
Update for Macy. So Macy has continued to improve and at her last check on June 13 her PCV was 41. She has been doing every other day with the Aza for a while now and on the 13th we decreased her pred down to 7.5 a day from 10. So far she seems to be doing fine and we go back middle of July and if all is good we will reduce again. She’s gained all of her weight back plus a pound but I am trying to keep her from getting any bigger by adding in lots of canned green beans and such to keep her from taking in too many calories. She is now back able to jump up in a chair or the couch and is close to behaving normally. Hopefully she will continue to do well and we can get her off all the meds in time. The vet and I agree that we will taper slowly and wait a month between decreases to try and avoid any relapse.
