- Staffie X Tiger Diagnosed with AIHA
Hi Adam
Don’t even give today’s tiny error a thought – forget it happened as it is no big deal. Leave the losec until tomorrow otherwise that would be a double dose which is not advisable. Tomorrow, just give the losec at least 2 hours away from the other drugs. So – do not give another losec tonight.
Infected scab – it is really difficult to get things to heal up on prednisone. Immuno-suppressants cause this problem (side effect), so keep a close eye & show the vets next time you go – they can give you some antibiotic cream if necessary (watch he can’t lick it) or maybe some antibacterial wash such as chlorhexidine. Worzel had a raw infected leg wound from careless shaving at the vets for a drip – it was painful for him & it didn’t heal up at all until we lowered the prednisone dose right down. I had to clean & dress it every day for a long time. It was just one of those things we had to contend with because of the pred side effects!
Now you can finally go to bed! Have a good sleep.

Adam, hope you got some much needed rest.
Get the scab checked when you can. I keep on hand a spray that I got from the specialist called Wound Gard. (I now get it online as it’s a lot cheaper). I use that for any sorts of little hurts. It’s an antiseptic with a bitterant to stop them biting at it, and also mildly anaesthetic. Usually works very well.

Hey All,
I thought I would give you a quick update on Tiger.
He was more active today, we took a short walk around the block to get out of the house for a bit.
Overnight however, he seems to have developed a few small skin lesions, I am taking him up to the local vet today to get them checked on when it re-opens at 5pm.
Hopefully its nothing serious, his gums are still a good pink colour and he is alert/active when he isnt asleep.

Hey Adam, that is sounding good. You can tell a lot by how they’re acting.
I’ll be the lesions are from the meds. It happens sometimes. Remember to keep Tiger on the quieter side until he’s blood numbers are better. A walk is fine, probably cheers you both up.
Did you get any results? If you have, post them through the Urgent Advice or you can just list them in a response.
I’m glad Tiger is sounding good.
My best

This is most likely a staph infection. Read this glossary item.

Hi Everyone,
I have some good news! Tigers PCV came in today at 38! His last PCV was 29 on Tuesday so it looks like he is improving :) (touchwood).
@Patrice, that staph infection looks exactly like what he has, does anyone have any suggestions on how to treat it? I have showed the vets but they haven’t prescribed any meds to fix it, Ive been told to use some warm salty water and keep the area clean using that.
Thanks again everyone,
Adam and Tiger x
Hi Adam
I can only say – whooopeeeee! My goodness, that’s a normal level – wow -what an improvement. You must be over the moon.
I didn’t have this exact problem with Worzel, so I can only suggest chlorhexadine (not near eyes, nose or mouth) twice a day as an interim treatment & stop it spreading if your vet hasn’t given you anything for the staph infection. It does need keeping an eye on & we have had a few people on here whose dogs have had this exact problem. I’m sure Patrice or one of the others who have experienced it will come up with a better idea. We all have to be careful about which antibiotics our dogs can have with this disease – sulfa, cephalosporins & penicillin based drugs should be avoided. The first two are the worst culprits.
I found these for you:

The following mentions Povidone Iodine – has anyone else on here tried his please? I would check with your vet about this personally. What does everyone else think?
