- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hey Linda!
Sorry for delayed response – 2nd week of school and we already had 2 tests today! They don’t count against us but nobody wants to be the one to fail the first test lol! Its interesting that you mentioned Horner’s – awful that poor Sadie has it though. We spent like 20 minutes in Embryology talking about it last week – I had never even heard of it before then. I’m glad Ms. Sadie has improved with that.. these little pups are such survivors! When I took Steve’s stinky brother in today for his anal gland expression, our general vet was saying that Steve’s been through a lot… tell me about it! Tell y’all about it!!
I’m glad I am using the same milk thistle as you – so far I have given him about 8 drops twice over the last 24 hours. I was worried that it might upset his stomach but I really haven’t seen any problems with it. Should I stay at that for a few days or you think it’s okay to increase it?
Steve is also on anti-clotting meds in addition to the aspirin.. we have him on Lovenox. I wondered why he would be on both– did his blood work show that he needed to be on both? The doctor mentioned that when they decrease his Pred maybe we would be able to discontinue it because it’s super expensive ($300 for 2 weeks). However, I am more than willing to sell a kidney to pay for it.. i’m super anxious about blood clots. Does anyone have any insight as to why they would put him on both?
I have been playing around with cooking for Steve – I don’t know if that is bad since his diagnosis. Because of the bladder stones though he has to be on U/D or purine-free diet forever. Only giving him wet U/D gives him diarrhea; only giving him dry makes me concerned about bloat. I usually use both, but I have started giving him a few things that are purine-free like eggs, cottage cheese, peanut butter, etc. instead of just u/D. He really doesn’t like it and it smells kind of nasty. I made him Dr. Dodds’ liver cleanse diet but I haven’t stuck to giving it to him for every meal because it has chicken which is on the no-go list for his type of bladder stone. I am super worried about him having to go thru that surgery while he’s dealing with IMHA.
I know Tamara is doing the liver cleanse with Mr. Ashki but did anyone else do it? I’m just curious if anyone had really great outcomes from it and if I should just suck it up and go for it.
He’s going for a check up tomorrow with the doctor, another PCV and everything. I’m going to be in class but husband has a list of things to talk to him about: 1) his tech sucking it, 2) the questionably stinky urine (though I think that was resolved with his brother’s anal glands), 3) running another full blood workup to see liver levels, etc… anything else?
I’m still a bit concerned he’s going to be a little over eager to knock down his dosages and we are going to have to battle. I also really want him on the lovenox — it makes me feel better, though I hate having to give the injections to him.
Thanks to everyone for reading my drabble and letting me bounce question after question after concern off of y’all!
Hugs! Hope and (food-comaed) Steve
Hi Hope,
I just had a thought if you are still concerned about the “wolfing down” food for Steve. I saw a plastic food bowl at the pet store the other day that has sticks poking out and dogs have to kind of lick the food out in between. I think it really slows the eating down. Maybe that is a solution?
Sorry I am so far behind with reading all the posts, I just sort of fly over it. I can tell you however that I fed Kahlu Dr. Dodds diet for a year and he just loved it. I loved preparing it for him because it felt so good to put something healthy and nutritious into him besides the nasty but unavoidable drugs. I have no scientific evidence that it was good for him but I am sure it did not do any harm. I don’t trust kibble anymore at all. I have no experience with the bladder stone problem you have with Steve. Is fish on the list of things he can not have? maybe that would be an option. Not Salon or fatty fish but cod or Snapper?
I know that the reductions of prednisone is very scary but you really want him off it rather sooner than later. A safe reduction would be no more than 25-33% every 2-3 weeks. You want to do a blood test before every reduction too, preferably one that is sent out and is looked at by a pathologist. They can tell if there are spherocytes, damaged blood cells, which would be a red flag.
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Sorry I have no answers about the two clotting meds. Maybe that would be a question for Dr. Dodds or the pathologist that looked at Steve’s blood?
Hey Brigitte!
That bowl sounds AWESOME- what store did you see that at?
He can have small amounts of white fish, in the sense that he can have small amounts of chicken. But they are still considered “moderate level purines” and he really needs to stay with low level ones. I just read that he can have tofu – I wouldn’t even eat that lol but I wonder if I could make the potato mash and add tofu to it instead?
Wish us luck for tomorrow! It’ll hopefully be a good day!
Thank you as always!

Ah panicking! I just took Steve out – he’s been gassy all night, not sure from what? Maybe the Milk Thistle? Other than that, he ate his regular U/D dog food + a little bit of cottage cheese. Anywho.. he had diarrhea, totally – it’s been loose but this was totally diarrhea. and at the very end, he was straining to go a little more and 2 little drops of blood came out. Again, I had the flashlight and was kneeling down by his bum so I saw them clear as day. Is this really bad?! Could it be from the persistent loose bowels? His gums looks great, his urine looks clear, his appetite is there, but 2 drops of blood in his stool! His appt is early tomorrow morning so I’m hoping to get him through tonight without having to bring him in. I gave him a tablespoon of pumpkin when we came in.
Please advise!
Hugs! (Freaked out) HOpe and Steve
Adding — it was 2 drops of bright red blood, not dark/tarried stool. I was googling and an article I read said that that matters, that bright red blood might “just” be irritation in the bowels/intestines?

Vally!
thank you so much! I swear, in another lifetime I wasn’t this high strung and anxious.. Or maybe I was but I really don’t think so! Lol! Thanks much!
