- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hi Hope
I’m so pleased to hear that Mr Steve is still on the up! Brilliant news, you must be so pleased. I’m afraid I really don’t know about the flea shampoo. It might be worth tapping the ingredients into a search engine with “IMHA” and/or “AIHA” and just seeing if anything comes up. Not the most reliable method, I know, but it might give you an idea. If in doubt, I’d always ring the vet before using anything.
What did you decide to do about the pred reduction and sucralfate?
I hope all is going well

Hey all!
Kind of freaked out — Steve’s got this dark red/brown bruise on his arm.. It’s where they had shaved him for the blood draws when he was in the hospital. Hair didn’t really grow back but usually the skin is pink. Tonight I noticed it looks like a bruise. That’s not petechiae or anything is it? I uploaded it!
Thanks!!
Hope
Uploaded your photo – it’s hard to see exactly what it is though. If in doubt, show it to the vets in my opinion. Were his platelet levels OK on the last test, Hope? Can you please check his tummy & elsewhere carefully for any other signs of bruising. I’m not sure what this is and would be happier if you got someone to look at it, just in case. As Mary says, it might be they were a bit rough with him.
Worzel had a similar problem, but his badly shaved area was constantly sticky, a bit infected & horrible with absolutely no hair regrowth until the pred reduction. I had to dress it once or twice a day as it was really sore & nasty for him – you know they always want to lick everything! When it started to heal, the skin turned black & so did some previously pink areas on his tummy etc – Patrice thought it was the side effects of the pred & she was right – the Specialist agreed. Even now after all this time he still has some black areas, although others have faded. I wonder if this might be the same thing as Dalmations are pink skinned too. If it is, well what the heck – a bit of skin colour change is nothing compared to everything else they’ve been through!
Let us know how you get on.
Loads of love to you & the stinkers

Hey Vally, Mary and Sheena!!
Thank you all for your very quick responses — I called the vet and they said it was nothing, just to watch it and make sure it didn’t get bigger or darker. I wasn’t exactly satisfied with that lol so I sent a pic to Steve’s old vet who saw him pre-IMHA. She said it looked like hyperpigmentation which isn’t bad — caused by licking like y’all mentioned! However, hubs informed me today that that IS where they stuck him the other day when they did the blood draw — well hello communication! lol so I am thinking they were a little rough. His regular vet said the same thing, that if it got bigger or darker to bring him in to someone. It looks a little lighter today actually so I feel better.
O and Sheena — I was ALL up in Steve’s personal space last night, palpating, squeezing, and looking for other spots. Nothing anywhere else. And his energy and appetite and gum color are fine so I didn’t bring him in. He was so annoyed with me that he wouldn’t even sleep by me anymore. lol
I’ll keep you guys posted — fingers crossed we wont’ have to go in this weekend for this.. or anything else for that matter!
Hugs and love to everyone!

Hi Hope
Glad you’ve not had to go in, and especially glad there are no other bruises you can see. I’m just wondering if it could simply be a bruise from the blood test, you know how people sometimes get when they’ve struggled to get a vein?
I remember that we had another user whose dog suddenly presented with a bruise. Patrice posted this link which might be useful to read:

Definitely one to watch but fingers crossed it’s just something very simple. As Sheena asked, are Steve’s platelets in the normal range?
Love to you, hubs, Steve and Stinky,
