- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hope I’m so glad you asked this question lol. Ashki has had rainbow poo too, well not rainbos, but orange, yellow-orange, yellow with a tinge of green, light yellow, dark yellow, yellowish brown, orange-brown… with mucous, without, etc. One question Patrice, I thought the brown came from heme, or is that part of the bilirubin?
tamara — way too curious for my own good
Hey Patrice!
I saw your post from a while back about ex-oficio bandanas for flea and tick prevention. I just got mine in the mail and wanted to ask real quick .. Is it okay that it has permethrin in it? Isn’t that the active ingredient in most of the spot on topicals?
Thank you!
Hope
Hope, this was Patrice’s comment in the earlier posting about Permethrin:
” Permethrin is a man-made derivative of Chrysanthemum flower extract that is impregnated into clothing fibers. It usually lasts through up to 70 washings. And before you ask, no it can’t weep onto the skin or into water. They have tested this significantly since it is used for American Military clothing and have found that the only way Permethrin leaves the clothing is via dryer lint. So both of us have head to toe ExOfficio clothing and I put big red bandannas on the dogs. Search for Doggles Insect Shield Bandana, but there are many brands.”
I like the idea of this so I’m thinking of getting one for Bingo before summer. Did you get it through Amazon?
Vally
Hey Vally!
Well that would have made sense… Referring back to the other post! Thank you! I swear.. In another lifetime maybe I was more sensical (I think).
I did get it from amazon:

Patrice had said she used this one and also said to look for the doggles brand one. I got tbis one bc reviews were better from what I could see.
Thank you!

Does anyone have experience with doggy sunscreen? Lol! I don’t usually bring Steve outside mid-day when home and I don’t plan to either when we go to the beach. When we brought Steve to the beach in the past he got sunburned and he was only out for a couple hours. Now I’m even more paranoid about it bc of the MMF being linked to skin cancer in humans also.
The one I saw on amazon is EPI Pet Sun protector. It contains the following ingredients:
Denatured alcohol, homosalate, ethylhexyl methocycinnamate, benzophenone-3, ethylhexyl salicylate, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, acrylates/octylacrylamide copolymer, tocopheryl acetate.
Basically sounds like a lot of scary stuff.. What do y’all think?
Thanks! Hope
Hi Hope
This thread has certainly grown, and please forgive me that I have not yet had chance to read up on it all. How are things going for you and Steve?
At the moment, I can’t see anything in your list of sunscreen ingredients which jump out at me as being worrying, but I would prefer someone else to have a look. I was using baby sunscreen on Mable’s ears recently and then discovered it contained several ingredients best avoided (for cats). Have you asked the vet at all? If it is only a small area of his body which is prone to burning, is it possible to cover it up at all? I’m sure that’s easier said than done ;)
I do hope all is going well with you, hubby, Steve and Stinker.
Much love, Mary and Mable x
Hello Mary and all!
We just returned from our too short but nice vacation before school starts up in full swing. I only took Steve down to the beach one night — he ran right out into the water and tried to go swimming. I had to run in after him lol! This boy loves to swim! I brought him out at dusk so I didn’t have to worry about sunscreen and I used a bandana and essential oil insect repellant to try to prevent any bites. I wish I had gotten to take him more places but we were with hubs’ family and there are like 40+ of them at the beach at one time. Every time Steve got around them he wanted to go crazy and play and be spoiled and eat everything out of everyone’s hands so I kind of had to stay back with him. He would get so exhausted just from the little visiting he did.
PCV Sunday before we left was 42% … Thrilled with that of course! One question about PCV and HCT that confuses me tho… Which one is generally more accurate and higher? A few weeks ago Steve had a PCV in house done and it was 40% and the out of house hct from same draw was 44%. I’ve heard generally hct was lower than PCV so I was confused.
Babesia tests came back negative..im super happy obviously but just a tad disappointed too. It sounds awful but it would be also nice to know what caused this hellish disease in him.
Meant to ask y’all — in the lab report we got back from dr dodds, Steve was negative for thyroiditis but low probable for hypothyroidism.. we’ve started him on meds. I know thyroiditis is linked to IMHA but is hypothyroidism?
Last question for today I promise lol.. Our internist wants Steve on sucralfate for another month. Are pups usually on it that long (he’s been on it about 2 weeks now).
Hugs and love to everyone!!

Hiya Hope
Glad you holiday was fun & the dogs really enjoyed themselves too! Great PCV news -well done Steve, you clever boy.
You questions:
HCT is a calculation – see
https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/AIHA_Terms/hct-hematocrit/
PCV is the percentage of the sample in the tube – see https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/AIHA_Terms/pcv-packed-cell-volume/
Thyroiditis is a term for inflammation of the thyroid gland, whereas hypothyroidism is lower than normal output of T4 (for various reasons). Hypothyroidism is a cause of IMHA. https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/AIHA_Terms/hypothyroidism/
Sucralfate is wonderful stuff – it’s only in the long-term that you get aluminium build up – don’t think about that as Steve has only been on it a very short time. Keep it going – it is the best protection in my opinion. When the drugs can be reduced down to a low level, the risk of GI tract irritation drops, so you can stop the sucralfate then. We stopped Worzel’s sucralfate when his pred was lowered to 10mg every other day (which was his last week of taking the pred actually). He had been on it for about 3 months, but I have seen dogs on it for much longer. It’s too risky to stop it while they are on the pred & cause GI ulceration which would certainly stop them getting better, or even make them much worse. Hope this helps!
Great to hear things are going well
Love & cuddles to you all
