- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Fruit leather is fruit thats been mushed up (some of them have added sugar, some don’t) and then the mush is spread out into a sheet and dried, but it’s not hard, it’s kind of soft and pliable. Maybe keep an eye out or ask at the market? Kids really like it!
Hi Hope
Regarding the 2 anti-clotting meds, here is a copy of what I sent you a while back, but you’ve probably forgotten about it with all the other things you’ve been coping with – none of us can be expected to remember everything!
“Clotting is a very complicated mechanism with lots of different factors involved. The two anti -clotting medications work in different ways – Lovenox (enoxaparin sodium) decreases thrombin, so prevents fibrin clots and is good for preventing & treating pulmonary embolism & deep vein thrombosis. Ultra-low dose aspirin is extremely complicated, but is basically an anti-platelet agent which inhibits the production of thromboxane. I would discuss with your vet when you get the next blood results done.
I think the reason your vet probably gave Steve aspirin was his platelets were a bit high on the blood test you posted on here (2nd June). They may have come down now, so you can talk about if he needs to carry on with that. Lovenox can reduce platelet numbers (a side effect), so you need to keep an eye on that. You know the big risk with this disease is abnormal (or inappropriate) clotting, so there could be something else your vet has spotted that needs the Lovenox too. ”
So you need to check with your vet about what is showing on the blood tests now & have a chat.
My personal opinion is that you should give Steve a dose of sucralfate last thing at night again. I know the vet stopped it, but if you think his tummy is suffering, it would be good to discuss putting him back on one dose at least. I think in view of the aspirin, which is notorious for causing GI ulcers & bleeds, and also the pred, it would be safer to do that. Patrice’s story of the sock incident that she posted the other day will stick in my mind forever. It shows the importance of stomach protection. I am one of those people who can’t tolerate aspirin at all – if I take one, I am in agony for a good 6 hours afterwards, so I’ve not taken any for years!
Hope you have a peaceful day with your lovely boys!

Hey there sheena!
I sure did forget that you had researched a bunch for me.. I’m super sorry! The old mind isn’t what it was a month and a half ago! lol I feel like I’m 100!
It’s Sunday morning (6:00am) here — should I go ahead and give him a dose of sucralfate or wait for our appt Monday with the vet? Id hate to think of his tummy hurting a whole other day. Does sucralfate need to be spaced out with any other meds?
Hugs!! Hope and Steve
Hi Hope
Vally is right – sucralfate is very effective, therefore it will block absorption. Last thing at night always had the best results for Worzel, 2 hours after his meds.
