- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hi all!
Steve’s regular vet gave me a box of Denamarin to try with him — that has the milk thistle and SAM-e combined right? Have y’all had good results with this supplement? Should I stop using the milk thistle tincture I have? Also, isn’t there something that needs to be given with it, like Vit B or something?
Sorry for all of the questions!
Hope
Hope,
Denamarin was the most important supplement I gave to Chance. His liver enzymes were over 10x normal. By the time we neared the end of his prednisone dosing (which extended from April to Jan the following year) his liver enzymes were nearly normal and remained so the rest of his life.

We’ve had really good results with the denamarin too. Ashki’s liver values got really high and are now normal.
Hugs!

Patrice and Tamara – thank you so much for your responses. I’m excited now about trying this out lol! The things that make me happy these days – new supplements for the pup, pink gums, nice BMs and clean wees! Lol! Isn’t there something that is supposed to accompany the Denamarin? I thought like vitamin B maybe?
Patrice – the vet tech said to go from 15 mg BID pred to 20mg SID with this newest reduction starting tomorrow. Is that normal to change how often it’s given (once a day instead of twice)? We’ve called 3x to check this and keep getting the same tech and she’s like “I’m sure. I’m sure” –> nightmare owners right here!
Thanks all!
Hppe
Hope,
Each clinic and vet develop their own protocols that can vary depending on their clinical experiences. Your vet has had success with this once a day dosing and wants you to do it that way. Prednisone is widely used for many conditions and vets are very experienced with decreasing it carefully.
It’s not necessarily how I would do this but that said nothing is written in stone. Each dog is different and responds differently when the prednisone is decreased. I have just learned to be more cautious over time. That’s not a recommendation, just my careful nature.
I am sure that if you have difficulty with this dosing your vet will respond to your concerns and make alterations.

Hiya Patrice!
Thank you so much for your response — I know I need to try to behave and listen to the professionals but I’m just SOO nervous. It’s okay tho.. I have my checklist: gums, lumps, wee and poo! Lol!
I’ll keep y’all posted!
Hope
Hey Hope, we didn’t add any other supplements with the denamarin, I haven’t heard that it needs to be given with any. Also, we’ve also gone from BID to SID when we went from 30mg to 20mg of pred a day. I’m like you, nervous about it, but Ashki’s continuing to improve even though we had to taper the pred more quickly because of his kidneys. Now if this latest complication will resolve ok…
hugs and love to y’all, scritchies to those boys!
tamara and ashki
Hey Tamara!
Thank you — glad to hear you have experience with this Pred regimen. I kept calling hoping to get a different tech today and she was like “nope, still me, still once a day”. Lol! And thanks for the info on the denamarin — I have to say I’m kind of excited.
Thoughts and prayers to Mr. Ashki and you of course! Keep us posted!
