- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hi Hope, Steve and Jeffrey. So glad you ARE taking it Low and Slow too. :)
Yes, as Sheena said, like Bingo, Sadie would tire (you remember like an elephant Sheena!!! How do you do that?!). I would try to walk Sadie around the block and get maybe 10 houses down, where she would stop and look up at me, scared and out of breath. I would pick her up (all 40 lbs!) and we’d walk toward home. All the way, I’d be whispering, “it’s okay, it’s okay, we’ll get there in due time” to calm her. And we did – it just took some time. But then, Sadie was on high doses of both prednisone and cyclosporine for way too long (due to relapse). Stay patient – Steve will get there too. He will.
As for Jeffrey pulling. Sadie has always been a puller. Mostly because she detests the hot sun and pulls to get to the shade. But in the meantime, my arm is about to fall completely off! So, I bought a harness called a Gentle Walker (not a Gentle Leader). It attaches at the bottom/front, so they have a tendency not to pull. Now, it does get tangled up in their front legs due to this, but if you keep the slack out of the leash, it helps.
Another ‘trick’ I used on Sadie, especially when she was a puppy and would literally pull me off my feet, was:
Using a regular collar and a long leash (at least 6-8 feet), I would pull the leash from where it was attached to the collar, attachment side up (on top of the neck) and run the leash along the back bone, to the rear, straight toward the tail. At the point just above their back legs (still on top though), I would loop the leash, holding the top in place, around to the bottom, between the tummy and hip/back legs (meaning, thread the end through the leash handle, creating a loop). Pull it through and around to the other side. This makes a “lasso” type of harness around their back legs with looped leash above on their backside, hind quarter. Their back legs, interestingly enough, is where they pull from, not their front legs. So, if you control their back end, they have less leverage and hence, tendency to pull. Sounds weird AND looks weird (my husband would not walk with me when I did this), but it does work – every time. Don’t pull hard, as the ‘loop’ closes (as a lasso would) and can be harmful to their tummy, I’m sure. Just little to no slack in leash is usually good enough to let them realize, they have no leverage. Ta da! This technique was found from researching when I was desperate for an alternative to the choke chain collars with the spikes (I threw that away – yikes!). I found this technique on a dog trainers website.
There is actually a product called the Instant Trainer Leash (you can google it), but you don’t need to invest in this when you can do the same with a regular collar and leash. Just remember, don’t let it become too tight around the tummy. But if you look up this leash, you’ll get a better idea of how to run the leash down the back, under the tummy and back around to the top. Watch their video and do it for FREE. :)
Good luck with all. As always – PLEASE keep us posted.
Lots of love and huge hugs, Linda and walking pretty nice these days, Sadie
Hello all!
sheena – I completely know what you mean about not sleeping with the kids like this.. I haven’t had more than 2 hours of continuous sleep since Steve was diagnosed. Between meds, potty breaks and the breathing issues I’m up all night! I’m happy to do it tho.. Sometimes I pass out after class when hubby is around to watch him so that’s just our new normal now lol! I also sleep with my hand on him to see if he’s breathing. Terrifying!
linda – I like the idea of a harness for both dogs actually .. I think once I get over the shock of this months bills from the hospital I might have to get some for the boys. I tried doing the other way and i just ended up confused and Jeffrey was most unimpressed with me! Lol
i wanted some advice on generic things if y’all don’t mind..
– Steve is to get 1/8 of an 81mg aspirin BID. It’s super difficult to cut a baby aspirin into 8 pieces.. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I end up wasting half of each pill bc it gets cut weird with my pill cutter since they are so small.
– he has a cut on his forehead from when he was feeling better in the hospital.. He was trying to escape his cage and was hitting his head on the wires of his door. It’s not an open wound. It’s more or less scabbed over but it’s not clearing up anymore. Is there anything OTC that would be safe to put on it? It’s still split and it’s all dry and I’m afraid he’s going to tear it more.
– I think he’s getting 1-2 little blisters/sores on his upper lip right where you open his mouth.. Idk if that’s from me pulling his lip open twenty times a day or what but is there something I could put on that?
Thanjs all!

Hey Hope, Steve, and Jeffrey! Hope, I wish I could help with your questions. Actually, I can say that Ashki has a little boo boo on his nose (from going after gophers — ahem!) and it is taking a really really long time to heal. I’m thinking it’s because they’re on these drugs? Same with his incisions from the bone marrow biopsy that was almost a month ago now — there’s still a little scab there on one of them.
I’m so glad you can get a little nap when your hubby is around, you must just be exhausted. Remember to take care of you, eat well, etc so you can take care of Mr. Steve! I know, easier said than done.
Ashki and I are sending y’all lots of hugs and love. You’re doing such a fantastic job Hope, I don’t know how you do it all!

Hi Hope
Tamara is so right – it’s the pred that stops them healing. Worzel had a weepy, sore leg wound from bad shaving by the vet nurse – she took a layer of skin off – she was really sorry & upset. It didn’t heal up at all until we dropped the pred dose. It was horribly painful for him & if I didn’t cover it, he would constantly lick it. I cleaned it with chlorhexadine (can’t be used near eyes, noses & mouths though) & dressed it every single day – I improvised a way of keeping the dressing off the wound itself, otherwise it stuck to the raw bit. His bone marrow biopsy wounds were very small (luckily) & I just kept them clean, but they weren’t as bad actually. All of a sudden, everything started to heal when the pred dose was lowered! So don’t worry – this will pass, like the heavy breathing, panting, thirst & weakness – as Linda says, these drugs are life savers & we have to help them get through these side effects & rough times as best as we can.
Regards the aspirin , I’ve never found a perfect pill cutter & got on better with a sharp craft knife, but you could try the pharmacy. If the tablet is soluble, you could use a syringe & pop the pill in, draw up to exactly 80ml & shake & mix really well, therefore 10 ml would be 1/8th. Fiddly though.
I would ask the vet about the mouth sores – they may have something you could try & they need to be kept an eye on in case they get infected. They catch anything going with the immuno-suppressants. I don’t know what OTC stuff you have over there, but be careful – you CANNOT use Bonjela for example as it has aspirin in it & that would mess up your dosage.
No wonder you are so tired! It’s bloomin’ hard work looking after them when they are going through this stage. Try & get some more snoozing in when you can!

I use a product the vet gave me called Wound Gard Antiseptic and Bitterant Spray which worked well on Bingo’s leg where the drip had been. It also wouldn’t heal, but also because Bingo wouldn’t leave it alone. I’m not sure if it was because Bingo wouldn’t leave it and the bitterant in the spray stopped him licking it that the wound finally started to heal, or whether the product helped heal the sore. After having paid heaps for it at the vets, of course I’ve since bought it on line at a quarter of the price. I tend to use it for any sort of sores that come up.
Perhaps some good old salt water?
The pill cutter – no such thing as a good one for that size. I cut Bingo’s pred into eighths. Most times, I’ll cut the quarter piece in half and have to toss out one of the halves because it’s crushed. I like Sheena’s idea but check it’s soluble.
Love Vally & Bingo
Hi all!!
Thank you all for your good vibes.. I think Steve is feeling them bc I swear today he seems almost pre-sick Steve! He’s perky and playful and loving his walks so much!
The aspirin I have currently is enteric coated so it won’t dissolve. But could I buy chewable aspirin and dissolve that? I add 80ml and just give him 10ml? I like that idea if it’ll work!
Hugs to all!
Hope Steve and Jeffy
Hey everyone!
I have a quick question re: meds.. I have a dinner tonight I have to be at for 6:30. Steve is due for MMF at 7:00 and a Lovenox injection at 8:00, what should I do? I’ve been super careful about being on schedule so I’m just nervous about going off of it. Should I give all early? Or give a little late? I am thinking of making husband stay home tho my family will be unhappy lol.
Thanks all!

Hope,
I am assuming this is being dosed for a non-acute risk of deep vein thrombosis. If it was acute, you would have him in hospital.
The critical element seems to be how often they prescribed the dose. If is it non acute, it appears that dosing once a day is appropriate, acute seems to be every 6-12 hours. I would consider this drug to not necessarily be critical with Steve right now, he has been stable for at least a week, correct?
In general it appears that timing is critical in maintaining a protection against thrombosis.
“Low molecular weight heparins have a more predictable bioavailability, allowing standardized dosing without individual patient monitoring.”
“Enoxaparin at 0.8 mg/kg SC q 6 hours consistently maintained target levels of anti-Xa activity in normal dogs without evidence of hemorrhagic complications.”
This is a tricky thing to advise. If this were me, and only me, I would give up dinner. I gave up many things when Chance was ill, including sleeping on a bed…. That is not necessarily what you need to do! Can you call the vet to find out what kind of wiggle room you have?
my best
