- Split: Split: For Hope and Steve
Hi all!
Just checking in- mr. Steve’s PCV this morning was 37%!! Super excited! The vet was there but “not there” (I think he only sees emergency cases on the weekend) so they said I had to wait until our appt with him to talk about everything.
I’m slightly nervous about him wanting to start decreasing meds- I know he has to and I’ve read all your comments about slowly. No more than 25% at a time right? He’s responded very well to his meds thus far (knocking on wood like my life depends on it) — do these dogs usually have a hard time with the weaning? I know every dog is different but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with it.
I asked the tech about the diarrhea and he said it’s not a huge deal and should be okay until we see the doctor. He said to just withold food and water for a little bit if it gets worse..not the greatest plan I’ve ever heard but okay. I also asked if he looked dehydrated and he said he looks ok to me. Again, not the vet but I guess I’ll take it until our appointment.
Our sam-E should be coming in the mail today and I’m going to run to get some milk thistle from the pharmacy. Y’all think it’s okay to start even tho we didn’t talk to the vet about it? Well actually I did technically bc dr dodds says it’s important!
Hugs to all! Hope and Steve
Hi Hope. I just lost TWO posts to you. One REALLY long one and one, not so long due to frustration. I am now typing in Word and will copy/paste – THIS should work!!! It’s not the website – my ‘shift’ key keeps sticking and my computer goes wacky. Da.
Congratulations on an awesome team effort and Steve’s latest PCV results!!! I know you are thrilled!!! 37 is wonderful!! :) :)
But please, please – on the weaning – go LOW on the reductions and SLOW, SLOW, SLOW on the time between the reductions. Sadie responded great to the meds once she started going up and we too started to wean her at a PCV of 37. She would have done great, I’m sure of it, but we went way too fast and she collapsed and we were back at square one. It added about a year to this illness – we’re at 1 ½ years now, it’s been a long road. So, just remember, LOW and SLOW.
And about the water and food withholding – I am not at all sure about this. To deny an AIHA/IMHA animal on prednisone/cyclosporine/plus of water is just plain wrong to me. Maybe deny one meal (good luck with that!), but water, I’m shaking my head, no. Anyone back me up on this? Or not (promise, no hurt feelings, promise).
Okay, on the milk thistle and SAM-e: I use human grade and use LIQUID (due to higher absorption). For Sadie’s weight (39 pounds, hefty little gal) I use 18 drops of the HerbPharm milk thistle and 11 drops of the Lumina Health CellFood SAM-e. I calculated this dosage from the Denamarin she took prior.
Milk Thistle: I use HerbPharm liquid milk thistle and typically buy it from Amazon, anywhere from $9 – $12 a bottle. It lasts about a month. If you have a Whole Foods, they carry it. Also, many health food stores are beginning to carry it or just ask them to order it. It’s pricier there though, as is the HerbPharm website.

SAM-e: I use Lumina Health CellFood SAM-e and typically buy it from Amazon too. It’s expensive, anywhere from $24 to $37 a bottle. It lasts about a month.

And the lip smacking, yes – Sadie is the champ!! I think, as Sheena says, it’s definitely the tummy. Sadie does it intermittently and I resort to giving her slippery elm, just pull open the capsule and add a little (powder, human grade) to Greek yogurt and add a tad bit of water. It soothes her tummy. When she gets her Atopica (one every five day, 10mg), it really messes with her and she had taken it yesterday. So yesterday, I gave her a Cerenia tab and it helped much. She has gotten Cerenia only maybe 10 times over the duration of her AIHA illness, but it’s a great drug to have on hand. Just remember, give these supplements away from the “needed and necessary” medication, by two hours or so.
And, congratulations on the medical school!! Something tells me you are going to make one heck of a fantastic doctor!! J
Love and hugs, Linda and Sadie
Nice PCV Hope! Steve is doing well & I’m so very happy for you.
Withholding water? No way in my opinion – do not ever do this to any animal, especially on prednisolone (or any other time), unless they have literally JUST (this hour for example) been vomiting, Dehyrdration can cause serious problems (kidneys amongst other things) & we ALWAYS recommend you have plenty of water available as dehydration is a side effect of the drug. I’m sorry to sound like I disagree with your vets, but I do. Are you sure it wasn’t just food? Dehydration is bad – test is to very gently pull up some loose skin on the back of the neck – if it doesn’t spring back, he’s dehydrated. Is it me folks, or has the world gone mad????? This goes against everything I was taught.
Be conservative on the pred reduction too – a stable PCV is essential for at LEAST couple of weeks before even considering a reduction. If the pred is not causing any clinical problems, you can afford to take your time. Withdrawal symptoms will be less too.
Love Sheena & Co xxx
Linda, I am LOL at you about hunting for the best bully sticks! I used to do the same. Poor Ash, such a boring diet now too but it must be done.

cooking lots of potatoes today :)
I’m so happy Steve is feeling better and had a PCV of 37!!! That is so wonderful.
Sheena and all — I’m right there with you on not withholding water — this was a tech, yes? Obviously someone not clued into the big picture.
Hope, you are awesome! All this and med school too! You are going to be an amazing doctor.
Sending you all love and hugs —

Hey all!
Thank you all for your support and advice! I definitely agree with everyone that the tech’s advice to withhold food and water (he definitely said both because I even repeated him to make sure I heard him correctly, it was so absurd sounding) was crazy.. and his lack of concern about Steve being possibly dehydrated. He looks way better now though.. I did the skin pull test and it popped back pretty quick so i think he’s okay. He’s been super hyper and active all day.. I can’t get him to lay down for the life of me so I think he’s definitely feeling better. I had to resort to literally laying down with him to get him to calm down.
Linda- LOW and SLOW, I got it! Thank you!
He really hasn’t had too many negative side effects.. just intermittent runny BM/diarrhea (which is better today than it was yesterday), what I think is nausea (due to air/lip licking) and back again today, the stinky urine. I first noticed it on Thursday when he peepeed in the bed. After I Odoban-ed (i.e. Anti Icky Poo Poo-ed) the smell away, I thought we were all good. I didn’t smell anything yesterday, and with the diarrhea deal it kind of slipped my mind. This morning was fine, but when I came back from the vet, I smelled fresh stinky pee pee in the bed. I’m going to take him in in the AM.. hubby thinks I should just wait until Tuesday when we see the vet (instead of taking him into the weekend “emergency clinic”) but I think we need to catch everything as soon as possible, right? His urine output and stream are great.. it’s really just the odor. He’s drinking up a storm and his urine is actually very clear so I assume it’s not super concentrated. Only thing I can think is UTI.. this can be treated fairly easily right?
Thank you also for everyone’s good wishes on school — what a way to start my med school career!!
xoxo Hope and Steve
Hope, no-one would believe what we do for these mutts – try and explaining to anyone else why you’re crouched down staring between Steve’s legs with a torch watching him pee.
Congratulations on starting med school. I totally agree, you’ll make a fabulous doctor. My nephew started medicine this year – he’s absolutely loving it. Hard work, but really loving it.

morning all!
Need advice re: sour smell.. I thought Steve had pottied on the bed and that was the source of the awful sour smell. I was ready to bring him in to the emergency clinic this am and see if he had a uti. However, in another shining example of the things we do for our dogs lol, I caught some urine from his morning potty break in a container and walked around smelling it for like 10 minutes. Smelled like urine! No nasty smell at all! Should I bring him in still or leave the poor thing be until Tuesday am when he’s due in anyway?
That also introduces the idea of me now having to find out what the heck smells bad on/near my bed.. All signs point to my other pup bc he’s a little more..challenging..than dear Steve is usually.
any advice would be super appreciated! I’ve resorted to smelling my dogs pee!
