- Sorta new here — need advice on new AIHA diagnosis in hospitalized dog
Thanks Patrice,
Now we are worried about something new. His pcv dropped again and fast, to 16. Hoping he is getting a transfusion now, but they don’t know why it is happening and are worried about bleeding. I am headed there now, hoping to get a little more info.
I do want to ask about thyroid. Dr. Dodds suggests the thyroid is interconnected, and treating thyroid may help with regeneration. I have brought up my concerns about him being hypo several times, but have been told this is not likely involved. Can anyone tells me where Dr. dodds research comes from on thyroid treatment, so I can share?
Lauren,
I know that it’s critical because it was an integral part of Chance’s treatment.
You can find a great deal of information about hypothyroidism on this page.

Jean’s reference page that she sent me is a document on this page. Look for the graphical representation of a thyroid molecule. You can open this document in a separate tab and print or save from there.
Dogs with non regenerative anemia do not have rapid declines in PCV HCT, their losses are slow, over time. This is not non regenerative anemia.
I don’t know all that has been checked but I would suggest also looking for internal bleeding. Ruptured spleen or spleen accessory growth, gastrointestinal bleeding, tape worms, ulcers. In these rapid blood losses there is a delayed regenerative response, that is expected.
My best Patrice
Update is he had some bleeding last night from where they tried to place an etube during his MRI. It kinked. The doc said it unusual to see bleeding, but he had a little on an ultrasound. This morning it seems to have stopped. He got a transfusion last night and PCV is back around 30. Really hoping it holds.
He also has a fever and an increased respiratory rate (probably related to the fever). They removed several lines yesterday, and he is on antibiotics already, and there are no outward signs of infection, so they are watching him and will do xrays if he doesn’t improve to make sure there is no pneumonia.
Gosh this is so hard.
Hi Lauren
Just a quick message to say I hope Ernie is doing better today. As Vally says, it’s horrible having to leave them at the vets, but he is getting the best attention there from what you’ve said. Thinking about you & hoping now the bleeding is under control, he holds steady on the PCV front. Keep us posted when you get a second.
Big hugs from us all
