Hiya Jill
No Tylan parcel yet??? Bloomin’ post!!!!!! Instructions are enclosed. Let’s hope it sorts out these horrible intermittent cowpat poos.
OK – the plan as I appreciate Snoopy has muscle loss which happens with our type of dogs pretty quickly. I completely agree with your vet that our dogs get weak because they have not an ounce of fat on them. I’m sure Brigitte will agree – Poodles are also sight hounds & lacking in fat. So let’s go for the quickest safe reduction we can. You were absolutely right to stick to you instincts that the reduction was being started too quickly, so you are certainly getting your head around the dangers of relapses. A relapse is far more serious than some muscles wasting. I promise his muscles WILL come back as you reduce the pred – I was amazed how quickly Worzel recovered after looking like a skeleton with a big belly! He had “pred head” – his jaw muscles had started to shrink (atrophy) & he had hollows behind his eyes. But we have to persevere wih the drugs until it’s safe to reduce. I know how hard it is to see them like this – lethargic, shaky & weak.
Leave Snoopy at same pred dose (50mg per day 25mg twice daily) for 2 further weeks, get PCV done.
If PCV OK reduce by 33% therefore 35mg per day divided ino 2 doses, therefore 20mg morning then 15mg evening for 2 weeks, then get PCV checked after 5-6 days.
Get another PCV done after 2 weeks from date of reduction – if still OK reduce by another 33%, therefore 25mg per day divided into 2 doses, therefore 15mg morning then 10mg evening for two weeks, then get PCV checked after 5-6 days.
Get another PCV done after 2 weeks from date of reduction – if still OK reduce another 33%, therefore 15 mg per day divided into 2 doses, therefore 10mg morning, 5mg evening for another 2 weeks, get PCV checked after 5-6 days.
Get yet another PCV after 2 weeks from date of reduction, 33% reduction to 10 mg per day, therefore 5mg morning, 5 mg evening. After 2 weeks go to 5mg morning only for 2 weeks, 5mg every other day for 2 weeks, then you can stop it altogether.
Patience is a virtue with the drugs! We always give the largest dose in the morning as this is when the adrenals do more work.
Does this make sense? Tell me if it doesn’t! I can do you some charts with dates if you want on Excel, no problem.
Dear everyone – please feel free to say what you think of my “plan” – other ideas are always welcome.
Get some FortiFlora by Purina for him too – I gave Worzel 1 sachet twice daily with his food whilst he took the Tylan. I also used Royal Canin GI diet & added fish, turkey or low fat beef mince temporarily – he loved it!!!!!! Plus pumpkin or sweet potato. I know some people prefer to cook their own food, so up to you.
Loads of love & bigs hugs to you all

PS if you are unsure of anything when you get the Tylan, just ask.
Hi everyone, received the parcel Sheena ,many thanks, will be purchasing the fort flora to. Snoopy is doing well, he is a little weak on the back leg were he has muscle wastage but hoping that will recover with time, ive changed to low fat hills id food added some fish which he loves and going to buy some sweet potatoe for him to.We have a vet appointment on the 17th march for blood level check, then if all is well will start to lower snoopys predonisilone by 5mg, do hope his blood has stayed the same .Thankyou for all your advice, loved reading about your storys, even had me crying! This desease is such an awful thing for any dog and owner to go through, its really stressfull, im always worried im doing the right thing, thankfully I have you lovely people to ask, and I do have a lovely vet to who has saved Snoopys life , who I can never thank enough.hope this finds you and your doggies well love and hugs Jill and Snoopy xxx
Jill, don’t worry about the muscle wastage. That will truly come back. When the pred dose is lower, you can start to work on the muscles but doing some gentle exercise. Ramp work is great, or just walking up and down gentle slopes helps them. Wait until it’s a bit lower though.

Hi Sheena and Valley,S noopy has had the Tylan powder for last 2 days, and as if by magic his poo has got a lot better, thankyou, how long shall I give him it to him for ? will he still need the fort flora? Snoopys been looking a bit sorry for himself last few days hasn’t wanted to go out as much but I think its because of the none stop rain here and its been cold , im hoping that’s all it is , ive checked his gums they are pink, hes eating and drinking well, im sure these drugs take a great toll on there poor bodys, he is shaky on his legs and looks skinny except for his pot belly, will he go back to normal eventually when is off all the drugs? hope you and your doggies are all well love jill andSnoopy xxx
ps thankyou for the charts Sheena, my hubby has printed them off me ,ready to take to vets they look great, very clear, xxxx
Hiya Jill
Well, that’s good news on the poo front! Let’s hope this will continue to keep him free of diarrhoea. Tylan should be given for a month, sometimes longer & some dogs need a low dose forever, but most dogs sare able to stop after 30 days. Like any antibiotic, you should ALWAYS complete the course to prevent bugs becoming resistant – this is important – we all want Tylan to continue working to kill bacterial overgrowth. Hopefully, that should do the trick! You should also continue with the FortiFlora twice a day for that month – you are killing off bad bacteria & encouraging the good ones to thrive instead. That’s the plan!
Worzel looked like a barrel belly with stick legs too – but it won’t be long before the pred can come down. Hang in there!
Let me know what your vet thinks about the charts – hopefully he’ll be happy, as this is the quickest safe reduction other specialist vets recommend. We can always go slower if needed, so no worries.
