With the milk thistle how much do I need to give Snoopy? im thinking going to town today to health food shop to buy it, I dontknow why our vet didn’t want me to give him that? do you know of any reason? Thankyou Sheena I think it would be good idea if I had a list for our vet on Monday, if you have time to do me one would be great xxxx I will e mail the vet and ask if its ok to give the milk thistle, thankyou all for your help xxx hope your doggies are all well xxx
Hi Jill
Just check the ingredients on the can says 100% PURE pumpkin (i.e. no sugar or salt or anything else added) – I’m pretty sure you’ve got the right one.
I can’t think of any reason at all why your vet doesn’t want you to give milk thistle, apart from he’s probably never heard of it used for lowering liver enzymes. But start at a LOW dose in case it upsets his tummy. In larger doses it can cause loose stools & we don’t want him getting diarrhoea again.
It sounds like the metronidazole has helped his tummy – another reason I still think Snoopy has had some sort of GI infection. This really says it all! Again, let’s see if we can persuade your vet to look at the Tylan Powder. I will send you links to all these things again, then you can print them & take them with you on Monday.
Love & hugs

Hi all Snoopy is doing well, he is on the Sam e twice a day already has been for a few weeks now but the milk thistle should arrive today as ordered Solgar make, bought one from pet shop but its 80% will be returning it.Its vets this evening so I we have printed off info on Tylon powder and milk thistle to show him and also he will be having blood tests done, and check blood level which im hoping as gone up fingers crossed. Snoopy is still on the hills id gastrointestinal, so im going to ask if he wants me to carry on giving him it or change to low fat version? don’t want to change to much as don’t want his direah coming back. Just want to say thankyou to all of you, for all your help, especially Sheena who has been a rock, sorry I am a bit green sometimes it takes me a while before it sinks in! hoping your you and your doggies are all doing well love Jill xxxxx
Hiya Jill
You are like we ALL were – trying to get our heads around this horrible, complicated disease. Your vet hasn’t explained much about anything to you, so how could you possibly know? You are certainly not green at all!
I will be sending the Tylan capsules depending on what your vet says, already made up to the right dose (20-23kg) by me & my wondrous assistant, Phil. He’s great with a pair of tweezers & fiddly capsules!
If you think Snoopy is doing OK on the current diet, I wouldn’t change it. If he is not doing well on it, try something different for sure.
I know everyone on here is right behind you with support. Between us, we can suggest some good diet ideas – Brigitte & Vally are great at this kind of thing. Linda also has to be careful with Sadie, so I’m sure we can come up with other ideas. You can also use Dr Dodds liver cleansing diet. That’s a really good one for our pups & quite easy to do.
Hope Snoopy is perkier & will soon be on the mend.
GOOD LUCK TODAY
Love & hugs

Hi all, we are back from the vets, they are sending Snoopys blood off to lab to test the blood levels ,liver and pancreatic s , the test which invovoled starving overnite hasn’t been done as vet wants to see results of these tests first? The vet will be ringing me in a few days to let me know the results. I showed him the milk thistle he said if I want to give him it I can, I also showed him the Tylan powder infomation ,which he said is not licensed in the uk? he cant say to use it, as dosent really know much about it,he said snoopy dosent really need it at the mo, he said when snoopy runs out of the metronidazole he wont replace it just now and we will have to see if the direah returns? and take it from there?he said snoopy can stay on this hills id for now or if need be forever, He said Snoopy is doing well, so just got to wait now for results now? sorry to ask again but how much milk thistle do I start Snoopy on? 1 of the solgar capsules contains: sylmarin140 mg (80%) milk thistle powder( aerial) 300mg? Do you think once the metronidazole has run out snoopy will need the Tylan? thankyou again love and hugs Jill and Snoopy xxxx
Jill, sorry to ask again, but what does Snoopy weigh?
Dr Dodds, in the liver cleansing diet, recommends Milk thistle dosage should be a percentage of adult human dosage at:
5 lbs – 10% human dosage
5-10 lbs – 15%
11-20 lbs – 20%
21-40 lbs – 30%
41-70 lbs – 50%
71-100 lbs – 75%
100 lbs – 100%
With the Tylan powder, keep it on hand. I keep some in the cupboard. If Bingo gets diarrhea for more than a few days, I’ll use it.

Hi Jill
What a shame about your “closed-minded” vet – he obviously hasn’t even bothered to read the Tylan veterinary info I sent you. That is me being polite! He is correct in saying the UK is way behind the rest of Europe & the USA etc in not using this drug for canine diarrhoea and EPI. Just as they are way behind on our dog’s disease in many ways.
I can only say that, if it were me, I would start Snoopy on the Tylan the day after he finishes the metronidazole if he still has loose stools or even intermittent diarrhoea, which I thought was ongoing from what you said a few days ago? Am I right or are Snoopy’s poos completely normal now? If he is completely normal, he doesn’t need anything. If they are not, he needs help. I am still thinking he has GI issues which I am worried about. My vets had never heard of Tylan powder either, but when they saw the info were more than happy – and were very impressed with the speed of Worzel’s improvement. We can only get injectable tylan here in France (NO WAY – AGONY apparently) so I got it imported.
I’m so sorry, Jill, that things are “difficult”. At least he has finally let you use the milk thistle. So you need to use half the human dose on the Solgar label as a daily dose MAXIMUM. It is 80%, so that is the right content. I started Worzel on a quarter human dose (give with food please) for a week to see if it upset his tummy. If it does, reduce again to an eigth. If it doesn’t upset him, increase to to a half human dose after a week. Any problems, drop it down again. I’ve not heard of anyone having a problem with it on here. Worzel had tummy ache (no diarrhoea) BUT he was also on doxycycline then, which is notorious for terrible tummy ache, so I think that was a red herring.
Vally – can you help us here please? What milk thistle dose did you do for Bingo? Linda also had Sadie on it & I promise it has worked for us all in bringing down enzymes, or certainly preventing them from increasing.
Hang on in there with us Jill – I know this is a quandry for you!
Love & hugs
