- sassy is relapsing.
Hi Alyssa
Ah, I see – the free catch could have been contaminated by anything really – I would ignore it in that case. No need for shampoo or anything. Just forget about it if the sterile catch was fine. That’s what matters.
Sheena x
Noticed the glands under Sassys jaws are swollen tonight. She is very fine otherwise and we have a vet apt. very soon.
Sad, sad. :( This convinces me it wasn’t just Pred and there is an infection we can’t/wont find until its out of control, or something like lymphoma.
First thing Wednesday morning. If I am able to go sooner I will if they get any larger. Right now they’re firm and I would say a little under marble sized. I don’t feel any of the other glands (knee, armpit, chest). I took her temp which is fine. I don’t see a reason for the swelling, I looked all in her mouth for an abscessed tooth or anything at all.
The only thing I can POSSIBLY think of is she slipped a few days ago coming up the stairs and bumped her chin. It was nothing dramatic and she didn’t even stop afterwards or show any signs that she’d done it. I don’t even know if injury can cause lymph swelling.
(We build a whole ramp for her after she did this)
My mother has to go have an extensive root canal Monday which means I won’t have the car. Tuesday is predicted horrible T-storms. So I’m going to try to hold out until her actual appointment, she is so bad with storms Id hate to combine that stress ontop of a vet visit.
Am trying to remain positive but I’ve nearly convinced myself it’s lymphoma :(
I see that it is sometimes treated with prednsione if chemo is denied, and that usually gives them 1-3 months. I question if it relapsed her, and starting pred caused slight remission, but now it’s showing because it has been about that long… and also read being on pred before start chemo can drastically lower chances of remission, so even if I were to consider chemo, the odds are very high against her.
Other symptoms she has that are on the ‘lymphoma’ list are increased thirst and urination. I know this is a Pred side-effect too. But, in the last month her thirst/urination has increased dramatically.
With her first attack(march 2015), she needed to pee every 4 hours or so when on the high doses of pred and water consumption was up, yes. But starting about a month ago, her water consumption is WAY up and she needs to pee every 2ish hours, and pees *a lot* each time.
I never withhold water but I do try to stop her/slow her down after shes stood there and drank and drank and drank by saying Sassy! Stop! – she will flat out ignore until the bowl is empty, then lick the empty bowl and want more. She’ll drink down I would say 3-4 cups of water at once. No difference after lowering the pred, either.
I read that often the only sign is the nodes. Additional symptoms are all very similar to Prednisone usage, so it’s hard to say (weakness, muscle atrophy, etc)
Hi Valley, they haven’t gotten bigger, but I don’t think they’ve gone down either. You can see the area is swollen by looking at her from the side, and there are two hard nodules on both sides – still thinking they’re about marble size or a tiny bit smaller.
Sassy seems fine – I actually wish she’d show me signs of infection though :( She was chasing a fly today, rarely does that. Lots of tail wagging.
Back from checkup although won’t have results until Monday. However, vet does suspect lymphoma. We are both praying for something else, but we both think it is likely.
We aspirated and sent it off for testing. In the mean time, starting Doxy incase it’s something else. If by a miracle it comes back negative, we may test for a broad tick panel. We did some X-rays on the chest to rule out fungal infection in the lungs.
In addition to her two neck nodes, the ones in her front chest are swollen as well.
When aspirating, the vet informed me that as soon as she poked it a lot of blood squirted out, just dripping out. She said she never saw anything like it. I can’t find any info on this.
Now for the weird results. Her cbc was perfect. 43 PCV, 350 platelets and 12(!) WBC. After months of chasing some phantom infection and nothing ever working, her lymph nodes swell up and her WBC returns to normal…
I can’t put into words how sad I am. I feel like we’ve reached the end now.
Chemo is pretty much not even an option, if I wanted to – dogs that have been on Pred like her usually don’t respond. I read that and the vet said she’s saw it happen lots where people decide not to do chemo, use pred only and then change their minds – and chemo doesn’t work at all. Pred does something there. She is just not a candidate for chemo.
Alyssa, I’m so very sorry to read this and hoping and praying that it’s not lymphoma. I want to say, lower WBC is a good sign and I’ve just quickly googled for blood in lymph nodes and also didn’t find anything. So hoping with everything that is is some sort of infection.
Monday probably seems like forever away.
Big big hugs.
Vally
