- Sadie's story is up
Sadie’s story is of great importance. In some dogs, but not every dog, rapid reduction of prednisone can lead to a relapse. It is important for new owners coming here looking for help to read this and understand how carefully the medications must be administered.
I think the traditional treatment of giving pets prednisone (for whatever reason) and then automatically following up with a fast reduction are being rethought. Trying to find vets that have caught up with this trend can be difficult.
Sadie’s breed, Cocker Spaniel, is on the short list of breeds that are more genetically prone to this condition. Trying to explain that to a frantic owner is very difficult. How do you teach a short course in genetics? What we can do is help these owners approach treatment more carefully and avoid not measuring their dog’s progress against other dogs.
Having Linda as a resource for these owners is extremely valuable.

Thanks all. I can not stress enough, the importance of slow weaning. After her relapse in June, I am going overboard with SLOW, but so far, we’re good. Had I done this initially, Sadie would have most likely been on the prednisone and cyclosporine for less than 6 months on stead of a year. We still have much strength/muscle mass to regain and weight to loose, but her PCV last Thursdsy was 48! This has been the highest yet. Yes, I cried (happy).
And also very important are the tummy, liver and anti-clotting medications/supplements. The total process, promoted from all here from her onset, is why Sadie is doing well.
It’s been a long journey, but worth the travel. Again, thank you all for hanging in here with me and Sadie. We couldn’t have gotten to this destination without you.
Much love,
Linda and Sadie
Hi Linda
WOW!!!! 48 PCV is really great news. On here, we have all seen relapses happen too often with a fast drop in medications, but sadly some vets don’t have any experience at all with this disease. It is horrible for anyone to have to go & “argue” with the vet. Hopefully, we can get across to any new owners on here that slow weaning is VITAL. Wouldn’t it be great if vets listened to us too? Dream on, Sheena!
