- Pit Diagnosed with AIHA
Well, the news isn’t that great. :(
Last times results:
47.82 PCV
339 PLT
Today: 47.01 PCV
243 PLT
So her platelets have dropped 96 points in 2 weeks, and her level dropped a bit, but I’m not even really considering that a drop. Her PCV is stable.
I’m feeling pretty sick now :( We are staying on the same dosage of meds.
Her weight is also insane. She was at 76lbs 2 weeks ago and was at 81lbs today. I don’t see how, since we’ve been eating less. So they’re sending off a thyroid panel somewhere. That would also explain her skin.
The good news is the milk thistle I’ve been using seems to be working. Last month chem results were:
alb: 4.2
alp: 235
alt: 214
todays:
alb: 4.0
alp: 215
alt: 134
For reference, here are here PLT results through this whole thing. They haven’t been this low since she “got better”:
Then range is 200-500.
3-13: 141
3-16: 160
3-17: 133
3-19: 141
3-23: 451
3-26: 524 (high)
4-11: 438
5-11: 398
5-28: 339
6-11: 243 (today)
Right my friend Alyssa!
You can look up normal levels on this lovely website:
http://www.2ndchance.info/normaldogandcatbloodvalues.htm
Please Everyone, remember levels do fluctuate -if they are normal, they are NORMAL!
Sassy’s platelets are not low – they are perfectly normal. There is nothing to worry about. Low platelets below 60 are to worry about. My non-IMHA dog Ollie has platelets slightly below normal, (140-150) but that is OK for greyhounds & lurchers. Remember these things do vary between tests too.
Also her PCV of 47 is really GOOD! Why is your vet saying you can’t reduce? I don’t understand. There is no reason I can see why you shouldn’t be reducing the pred at our recommended rate from the above blood test results – this will get her weight down too. Pred = hungry & water retention. You need to do the reduction as follows of course:
https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/AIHA_Terms/prednisone-dose-reduction/
Slowly & safely.
Great to see her liver enzymes are under control.
Now stop worrying this instant – sending love & hugs
Sheena xxxxx
PS you can scan & send the whole blood test to us if you want – it might put you mind at rest?
Hello Sheena, thank you for the encouragement :) And that website. I’ve bookmarked it, good to have it all in place and not just google random sites!
The dr felt as a precautionary measure we should hold this latest reduction until we do a recheck (2 weeks) to make certain she has not started attacking her platelets, because it was a pretty large drop, and the lowest shes been since getting sick. It is still normal, but it seems like it was a REALLY big drop?
She did tell me the numbers are not concerning yet and are still normal/safe, and they don’t get concerned until they’re in the low 100s. But that with this disease, it can very quickly decide to start attacking something else, and we felt it safer to make sure that isn’t what is happening before we wean any lower. I desperately want to get her off these drugs, but I am so scared of a relapse, and now with these results, even though her PCV is stable, I’m scared.
I sent the full results of todays test and the test from 2 weeks ago to urgent advice so you guys can see all the numbers!
For some reason, I just noticed the first 2 week old test has the names of the results cut off on the left side. My photo didnt cut it, it’s just not there. If you look at the latest results though, the columns are the same and it includes the names of the readings.
