Just an update:
Sassy seems to be doing really well on her reduction. I was super nervous and checking her every few hours at first. But she is less hungry, and shes stretching a TON now – huge, big to the floor stretches :) She overall seems so happy. Demanding to go lay in the sun outside, whining at the side of my chair for attention, playing. Play is not back to the level before still, but she plays longer and longer each day.
Her “rash” is still here after 14 days of Zeniquin. But, it’s not really a “rash” anymore – all the pustules are gone, there is no redness. It’s just flaky dry bumps on random areas. I’m thinking it’s not an infection…and just bad pred-skin? The medicated shampoo I have is a Benzoyl Peroxide shampoo with vitamins and “no soap”, and shes been getting weekly baths. It seems to help, but I wonder if there is something better for this skin condition. I no longer think it’s a rash/infection.
So, before Sassy got sick, she slept in our walk-in closet. It was like a kennel to her, and she loved it – dark, quiet, nice huge bed and the comfort of the walls – she’d run in there every night when we said “night sweets”.
We did that because she is a SNORER. She snores like a train, and oh god, when she starts dreaming it’s like a symphony of snores. She is louder than any human I have ever heard.
So anyway, for the past three months I blocked off the closet because I wanted her sleeping right under me so I could watch her, and the other day she walked over to the closet like “hey, I remember this nice place, let me in”. Last night I decided to see if she wanted to sleep in there, because I end up waking her up every 20 minutes to make sure my fiance isn’t woken up because he has to get up so early. I know that isn’t good for either of us, so I let her back in the closet.
But I left the door open incase she got uncomfortable and wanted out, since she hasn’t been in there in so long. Around 4 am, she decided to come out and walked up to me, bumped me with her nose as if to say “you up there??” then laid down in her spot next to me.
I think she got used to sleeping right beside me. I know I felt weird without her being right there!! I almost made her come back out. Lol. So I had to play stop-snore the rest of the night. I just thought it was really sweet that she came out and bumped me before going back to sleep.
Hi Alyssa
Sassie is just TOOOOOO funny with her snoring – that must be really something to hear! Worzel is a bit of a snorer, but it’s very quiet & cute actually. He became even more clingy with the IMHA – I think that’s quite normal because we have to watch them like a hawk for so long, they get used to us being very close & vigilant. No doubt Miss Sassy is the same – missing the attention.
We have had a real heatwave here, so poor old Phil has gone into another bedroom because he can’t handle the heat from Worzel right next to us! I always slept with my hand on his chest when he was really ill – I still do now. Spoilt? YES!!!!! Our other lovely dog Ollie will NOT sleep on the bed for love nor money – “I want my very own bed & some peace & quiet”, he says.
I do think the skin problems will slowly settle with pred reduction, Alyssa, These drugs make their skin so dried out & their coat just isn’t normal. I promise Worzel looked awful – lots of baldy bits, peely skin & a dull, poor coat. Apart from one bit on his leg which is still completely hairless (infected for ages), everything is back to normal now. He is brown & white with pinky skin with lots of brown “naughty” spots – some of his pale skin goes black in the summer with the sun, then pales again in the winter. I am totally convinced this is the drugs – even though it was 2 years ago he stopped the pred!
I’m so happy Sassy is getting more & more lively – this shows she’s getting better all the time. The reduction in appetite is also really good news too. A bit of bad skin is the least of our worries – you will be surprised how quickly Sassy gets to look like her young & beautiful self again.
Love & hugs

Yes her snoring is very insane, I should take a video of it. It’s pretty hilarious when she starts dreaming. It’s super loud snorts, then fast pasted snoring, deep long snores, all while kicking her feet and whining. It is something to behold.
I let her in the closet again last night and this time she slept the whole night in there :) I still have the door open of course. I don’t think I’ll even be comfy closing it!
Another behavior coming back is her “yawn whine”, she would always whine at the end of her yawns when she wanted attention. Sassy is SUCH a quiet dog already, like, we tried so long to teach her “speak” and all that happens is a high pitched yelped when she gave up and really wanted the treat. So, her stopping the little amounts of noise she already made was awful! I’m so glad shes doing her old stuff again.
I have a way now to get her to play – I don’t know why this works but it does. If I go in the living room with her and sit or lay on the floor and be really quiet, kind of ignore her while she’s right next to me, she will suddenly jump up and go attack her toy and play for a while. Lol. I really don’t know why this works. I can go in the room and grab her toy and try so hard to get her to play, and she’ll ignore me. But if I ignore her? She’ll demand to play. Silly.
Poor Phil! We are just starting a heatwave too. Our already short walks are even shorter, and I can’t let Sassy lay in the sun too long. Shes black, so it’s even worse; she immediately starts baking. And she would just lay there if I didn’t tell her to get up. She loves it. But she gets too hot! Our AC broke in the main room – we still have it in the bedrooms thankfully but the kitchen and living room are a nightmare & it’s only getting worse. Cooking heats it up unbearably so I need to think of some quick-cool meals to cook…
Alyssa, you sassy is a beautiful baby and this disease is just terrible for any pet parent to deal with seeing their baby so very ill. just know you are not alone here. it is very normal for the wasting of muscle’s in the hind legs. .. heavy panting, drinking more water, seem like they want a very cool place to lay. a fur baby that once slept with you now wants to lay in the pet bed… but that will all change in time… yes… many fur children have to remain on meds for their whole life and some do not. the ones who do that is so there will not be a relapse. and those who take meds for life do fine. the high prednisone will be cut down in time but not too fast slow is better so you don’t face a relapse in doing this too fast .some fur children have more than one transfusion while some only have one. I am glad sassy’s vet gave doxycycline in the start as most IMHA fur babies end up taking doxy at one point in treatment. when my little one was hit with IMHA I asked myself what is this disease and what causes this to happen.. so many things can trigger this and some never find a reason or cause for their fur baby IMHA. nothing that a pet parent cause their fur baby to be hit with this awful disease. some cause can be stress bug bites like fleas ,ticks, spiders ,and snake bites ,medications, shots, … I am sure your vet asked many questions like could sassy have eaten a penny ant baits and ect. we get hit with a million and one questions when we just cant think trying to take it all in. for me I had never heard of this awful disease… feels like your world is closing in and you can’t breath… this is a wonderful forum. when my girl was getting her transfusion the vet gave me this forum and sent me home to contact them while Hayley was receiving her transfusion… I was so nervous I couldn’t even figure out how to contact the forum… really… my world closed in on me. my little 7.9 year old 2lb chi’s pcv was at 8% only hours ago she was running playing now this… now Hayley is 11 years old doing great. even a tiny might can fight this disease. let me tell you she was slower in getting to a good place than any fur baby on this forum but I had faith that she would beat this… my little one was so weak she couldn’t stand for months I made a sling to hold her up to wee and do the other business… really!!! and your beautiful say meds are just the very same that Hayley was put on.take one day at a time and rest I use to lay on the floor to be close as Hayley didn’t want to lay in the bed. they are like different fur babies … that too will pass and you will see more and more of the way it was as sassy feels better. rest is the very best thing… not moving because unlit the pcv gets in the 30’s .. . it best to let them rest as they are so serious and ill. I hope by letting you know Hayley was 7.9 years old when hit that she is now 11 years old … gives you hope to know they do get better never cured just remission . but you might have many ups and downs or at least Hayley sure did for months before we saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I wish say and you all the best. lynn & Hayley( she is tiny at two pounds but she fought hard as any 90 lb fur baby)
Alyssa, I really want to see that video.
Hey’s it’s gotten freezing here in just the last week. Absolutely freezing, so we’re snuggling :)
I’m thrilled to hear about Sassy playing and sleeping in her cupboard and whining and making noise again. It’s those things that other people probably never ever notice and it means so much to us all.
Love Vally & Bingo.
Hi Alyssa
I think we have a competition on our hands here – funny snoring & yawning videos would be great! My non-IMHA dog Ollie, is the funniest yawner ever – I can’t even describe the weirdness! Waaahhhiiiiahhhdnuuuu. Worzel is a very pretty snorer – a girlie noise from a boy!
Lynn – what did we do without you being here for us all? I am so very happy your back with us- love you & your babies loads
Sheena, Snchnnhhhhh, & Waaahhhiiiiahhhdnuuuu xxxxx???
Alyssa, so sassy snores ha! how so sweet and worzel snores very dainty too sweet!!!! oh… Hayley ‘s very loud you can hear her in the up stairs or down stairs….. that is something I missed while I was in the hospital out of state… and worried so…. they sent me home because … I too hold her while I sleep in my arms… or I can’t sleep. how wonderful when they start getting well enough to play… only those of us who have gone through this watching our baby fight… really knows …. it makes my heart so happy reading another fur baby getting over the hump so they can just be a fur baby having fun and making us happy … and, thankful. and, what I have learned on this forum.. our babies get better at home not the vet clinic(unless they are too weak of course) the same with me … I couldn’t get better being away and thousands of miles from my little ones. so afraid Hayley would relapse and the one that had stage 4 cancer. so the same holds true for our fur child they need us as much as we need them… thank all of you ,(sheena) its great to be back. I am just very slow after the stroke but my heart is for all fur babies as I love them all so much and my heart goes out to all the fur parents(mom or dad). but someone up in their 80+’s I am fighter … I can’t let my little fur child who needs me down. so … this is why our fur children fight too they love us so and they don’t want to leave us… they make it on our love until their little bodies are strong enough to fight on their own… so glad to hear sassy is doing well and the snoring too cute!
Vet in about an hour.
Will these nerves ever quit?!
Also time seems to be flying by. I can’t believe its been almost 3.5 months since this started.
