Hi Sheena
I’m afraid I haven’t heard of it but gave Mable something possibly similar (Comfortis) and she vomited everywhere a couple of hours later. Like NexGard, vomiting is a recognised side effect and the vets were unconcerned. I wasn’t happy to give it again and have just reverted to Stronghold. I’ll try to ask the vet about it next time we go, although I’m unsure if it’s used here.
Brilliant information from Patrice – thank you Patrice. This is really helpful.
Mary & Mable x
Patrice, very interesting on the Permethrin. I don’t use anything on Sadie, but she’s not out that much and when she is, she’s not in the woods. And these zero lot lines in these Truman communities in FL spray. Right this minute, I’m watching from the window in my office as a man in a boat is spraying the banks of our pond to kill what ever – yep, can’t make it up – at least he’s in the boat and spraying upward toward the bank instead of on the bank spraying into the pond. I still think that may have been the culprit to Sadie’s AIHA.
Trifexis concerns me. Sadie’s sister is on it and has been for quite some time. She seems to be okay, but I am hearing more and more that there are dogs getting sick. The holistic vet I took Sadie to, says they’ll be a class action law suit in the not to distant future, to just wait and see. All of it is so scary.
Like I wrote about poor little Dexter, between the vaccines and the flea/tick meds, I really think so much of it is rubbish. My other cocker spaniel, Apple, from years ago – she rarely went outside except to do her ‘thing’ and then back inside. After her first rabies shot, we did not give her ANY vaccines and we did not do flea/tick. I think for a while she wore one of the white Hartz flea collars, but that was short lived. She was the healthiest of dogs (ate Gaines burgers, for goodness sake!) and lived until she was 18. Those where the days. Can’t get away with that now. Changes definitely need to be made and not by the conglomerate corporations that make the stuff!!!
I found an article about the rabies vaccine, on dogs4dogs. I am not embedding the site because the copyright is 2005-2009 (it is different in several places) and I am not sure about the security of the site, but Jan Rasmusen is the creator and all is eye opening. She does mention Dr. Dodds vaccine protocol. Interesting.
Love to all, Linda & Sadie
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. You’ve all said pretty much the same things as I said to the vet, but I wanted to hear that it’s not just because I’m completely paranoid! Patrice, I am not a fan of systemics either & I have decided to go with the permethrin & continue with the Frontline. Out of interest, I am a big time anti-statin advocate unless there is a very good reason, such as atherosclerosis. But that’s another story.
Love to all & your pups, Sheena & co
Hello all..
I saw the post about nexgard and decided that I better tell you about my experience with it over the weekend. . A couple hours after giving the first dose of nexgard my dog began panting heavily his heart was racing and he began scratching so hard everywhere on his body uncontrollably. I had to give him 3 benedryl antihistomines and that barely took the edge off. I saw a post on a blog that gave the same exact discription of what hhappened to my dog …same breed and everything. I hsve a 77 lb. German Shepherd….I will be follow ing up with thr vet today. Also seizures have been reported with no prior disorder before using the drug. I WILL NOT GIVE THIS TO MY DOG AGAIN.
Hi Elaine
Apologies for the late reply. Thank you so much for telling us about your awful experience. You have put the icing on the cake – I will not be using this product either. Bless you for taking the time to let us know what happened – much appreciated.
I hope your dog is recovering from this terrible reaction, poor thing. Best wishes to you & thanks again,
Sheena, Worzel & Ollie
Hi all. Elaine – this is REALLY scary. Thank you so much for posting! The fact that NexGard (also maker of FrontLine) was recently released (Dec. 2013) and they are pushing it as ‘safe’ is horrible. Their website says, “Vet recommended” and “They’re begging for it” – oh my goodness!!! I read the side-effects, you read the side-effects and most here would, but John Q. Citzen, in their “I did not know that” and “it must be safe, the vet prescribed it” world that I too belonged to also prior to AIHA/IMHA – would not think it to be life threating. This is from their website:
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:
NexGard is for use in dogs only. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, dry/flaky skin, diarrhea, lethargy, and lack of appetite. The safe use of NexGard in pregnant, breeding or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures.
I would report it to them:

I hope you post your dog’s reaction to NexGard everywhere – including FaceBook!!! If people realize the complications of this this product right away, perhaps it can be taken off the market sooner and less pets will have to go through what your poor guy is going through, not to mention you.
My dog, Sadie, AIHA since 2012, is on Tri-Heart, Plus. She has diarrhea the day of and after it is given. That alone, scares me. But her mouth is pink still, so I continue to give it. And because, it’s the lesser of the evils – heart worm meds or heart worms (right Joe?!). But it still scares me silly each and every time I give it – I watch her like a hawk.
Thank you your post. I hope your dog is okay and this negative reaction is temporary and he recovers back to his healthy, happy self.
Warm regards, Linda and Sadie
I discovered fleas all over my Yorkie Silkie last week. Boarded the house stripped the bedding and called vet for comfortis , which has always worked great aside for,the fact that she won’t eat it on her own.
They don’t carry it anymore and I had to get nexgard. She is still itching not quite as much but a lot. What does everyone think of the trifled a?(sp?
I did notice she was sleepy the day I gave it to,her but I attributed that to the sleepless night of itching
