- Megan & Sophie
Thank you all so much for your help, it really means a lot to us. I agree with you all and want to get Sophie to another vet, just hard to find one that deals with IMHA. I finally got the vet to give her Sulcralfate and gave it to her last night but still doesn’t want to eat…I know it can’t work overnight, how long does it typically take to work? You can tell she is starving, but then spits everything out. Also she now has sores on her head, just her head, and they look awful. I have been cleaning them out and putting neosporin on them but they aren’t getting better…I’m sure it has to do with her immune system. She also has a large bruise like thing on her belly…it’s really large and covers about 1/4 of her stomach (do any of the meds tend to make them bruise easily?) She fell off the bed in the middle of the night onto my nightstand so I think that’s what its from but I’m so worried about everything right now that my first thought was internal bleeding. But she isn’t showing signs of that, at least I don’t think so. Her poor little belly is so big but she isn’t eating (except baby food by syringe), is that normal? I know Pred makes that happen but even if they aren’t eating much? Ahhh, so sorry for all the questions…
Megan,
never apologize for asking lots of questions! Nobody has all the answers, but between all of us we know A LOT.I am so glad you are considering switching vets or at least consulting with a specialist. Linda mentioned Dr. Dodds. You or your vet can make contact with her through hemopet. She will get back to you pretty fast if you call or sent her a short concise e mail. Her consultation fees are VERY reasonable, I think around $50. It could be the best $50 you have ever spent.
Not eating is NOT a side effect of prednisone. It is actually the opposite, pred makes a dog ravenous. This is why there is something else going on. I am glad you finally got the sucralfate. How many times a day are you giving it? Make sure it is away from all food and meds by at least 2 hours. I know that is a juggling act because you are giving so much medication. The bruising does concern me a bit, it could be that Sophie also has problems with clotting. Does the bruising, when you look close look like little pinpricks or just like a big red/blue bruise? Is she on aspirin? I think I would want a vet to have a look at it. the same with the sores on her head. This could definitely be a side effect from the immune suppressants. Many dogs get infections that need to be controlled by antibiotics, just cleaning will not do the trick. I think you are not getting around seeing a vet rather sooner than later.
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Megan,
I am very concerned about your description of the bruises on her belly. Please take her to an emergency vet if you can today. Her platelets may be very low and she may be unable to stop internal bleeding. If so, this is an emergency.
Inappropriate clotting is an emergency but if you are in a clinic that handles these types of emergencies, they will know what to do.
If this ends up not being an emergency then you can say that I am the nut and an idiot for worrying.
You are in contact by phone with Vally or Linda? Let them know what happens after Sophie gets treatment.

patrice
The bruise doesn’t look like pinpricks, kinda pinkish/maroon color…and its weird, I just noticed that it’s on both sides of her belly, not in the middle but on her left and right side running from about her ribs down to where her hind legs start and about an inch wide…No they (vet and Dr. Dodds said she didn’t need aspirin… We go tmw to the vet and I will show her the sore and bruise as well as ask about the Atopica (sounds like she’s on too much)
Funny thing is about the vet is she IS an internal medicine specialist. I have been talking with Dr. Dodds via email for a little while now. But the specialist has a God complex I think and doesn’t want to talk to her. The Sucralfate is once a day (I give it at night, 2 hrs after her last dose of meds) and it’s 1/4 of a 1g tablet (she’s 5 lbs). Should she continue taking pepcid an hour before meds if she’s taking the Sucralfate?
Also, how many B12 shots would y’all recommend? Once a week or every other week?
Megan,
I have seen this on Chance. This is serious and needs to be attended to today. Please do this now.

IMMUNE-MEDIATED THROMBOCYTOPENIA (IMTP) (Immune Destruction of Blood Platelets)
“Spontaneous bruising is the major clinical sign. The gums and oral surfaces or on the whites of the eyes are a obvious areas to check as is the hairless area of the belly. Small spots of bruising in large conglomerations called “petecchiae” (“pet-TEEK-ee-a”) are the hallmark sign. A large, purple expansive bruise might also be seen. This is called “ecchymosis.”
Yes as the others said. The bruising does sound like bleeding. Dont wait a day. That needs to be checked urgently. Ring the vet at the very least and describe it. Dont wait Megan.
Oh Megan
I’ve just read about the bruising – this is extremely urgent – I totally agree that this cannot wait, Please, please please, see a vet at a hospital urgently. Your “God” vet needs a good telling off for her bad attitude. These people make life so difficult & this is NOT your fault.
