Hi Linda
Many vets do not give anti-clotting meds as they don’t seem to know about the risks. I’m sure it wasn’t until I looked at Sadie’s blood tests & sent you some information to take to the vets about it that they added it in. At least your vet took it on board, unlike some of the others! This is all too common & it worries me – we need to get across to any new people on here how important it is.
That spraying around you is horrible, Linda. I’m glad they won’t be doing it again – it sounds very toxic.
Sheena – YOU are absolutely right. YOU were the one that kept insisting that Sadie MUST have anti-clotting protection. And it was also you (and Callie, and Vally, and Patrice AND a few others) that insisted about tummy protection (which at first was Sucralfate and now Pepcid and slippery elm cocktail) AND also liver protection (which was at first was Denamarin and now HerbPharm milk thistle and Cell Food SAMe, Amazon).
So, as much as my vet jumped on the basics of proper treatment, it was the “other” protection (to all the the horrible/wonderful life-saving drugs) that this forum and Callie and Trisha promoted.
As confusing as it all is at onset (a deer in the headlights twas I!), and determining the “right” mix of autoimmune suppressants for your pup, the “basic protections” are a must. My thick head did not get this immediately, as even my vet whom administered the proper treatment to fit Sadie, as far as red blood cell promotion/white blood cell cease, but had no idea of the needed protections for anti-clotting, tummy or liver protection.
Our dogs are on these meds in high doses for extended periods of time, be it a shorter extended time, longer or even longer due to relapse (again, s-l-o-w wean), these protections are a must. The complications without them, are life threatening.
So, again – my dear, dear friend Sheena – thank you for your ever so gentle but constant urge to have Sadie on “protection” through her ordeal with this horrible disease. Which is exactly why this forum is so very valuable – the knowledge is golden.
Thank you Sheena and all of you that have continued to keep me focused through Sadie’s AIHA plight. My vet’s immediate response and your constant support, encouragement and knowledge are responsible for her life.
Our love to you Sheena and all here, Linda and Sadie
PS – Sadie’s original vet has left his practice here but continues to do rescue work. His ambition is to promote his practice to 95% rescue work.
Linda – no thanks needed, but kind of you to say. We were all the same when our dogs were diagnosed. I was pretty clueless myself at the beginning & the feeling of helplessness is unbearable. Nice to see your vet is doing rescue work – he must be a lovely guy. You know Sadie is very close to my heart I would have done anything to help you. It gives me so much pleasure helping others to beat this disease – I am only repaying the kindness I received when I joined this lovely group of people.
Lots of love from me & the boys
I know what you mean Sheena (and all). It is so wonderful to know that this forum is back and here to help. I was the most lost of the lost! Thanks to all the help here, we celebrate a year next month (I thought it was February, but da – it’s March – long year!), the 30th! But still, taking it one day at a time. As you say, there is always ‘something’ to keep us on our toes!!
Much love and huge hugs to wonderful Worzel and outstanding Ollie, from sassy Sadie and me
