- For Hope and Steve
Sorry Hope, but is Steve staying at the vets or is he home. I assumed he was home, but I’m wondering now if he’s still at the vets, only because you mentioned you were waiting for the dosages from the vets.
Okay, I’ve just read Steve is still in hospital.

Still at the vets.. We brought him in Tuesday night late bc of the blood in his urine. His doctor said though that if he keeps stabilizing he can come home tomorrow maybe
Hope, the PCV can change slightly – I remember being told 5 up or down was an acceptable range generally. I know the PCV will vary depending on how hydrated they are, how stressed they are, also how long blood sits before testing, different things. There are reasons it will go up or down slightly and that’s not of concern. It’s continued drops that are of concern.

Yes Hope – that’s much too high – I’m sorry I assumed the 2 tablets were given separately therefore total 40mg – please check this with the vet straight away- it might be a typing error??? on the prescription. I apologise for not picking that up – serves me right for rushing.

Just repeating my reply further up!
“Yes Hope – that’s much too high – I’m sorry I assumed the 2 tablets were given separately therefore total 40mg – please check this with the vet straight away- it might be a typing error??? on the prescription. I have read that higher doses can be given in exceptional circumstances, but this would be only for a very short time. I apologise for not picking that up – serves me right for rushing.”
As he is still at the vets, I would assume they are giving the correct dose “in house”.
I’m the best one for making loads of typing errors as I go too quick, so don’t worry about the lovenox. I thought that was what you meant!
Zinc is notorious for poisoning dogs & cats – zinc oxide cream, US pennies etc are known causes of anaemia, so you may be onto something very important there. Don’t beat yourself up over the cream – no-one can possibly know everything. Onions are also toxic in larger amounts & can cause anaemia too – I have given my dogs left overs containing onions in the past & we’ve all done things like this on here, believe me!
Yes – I would definitely get in contact with Dr Dodds at Hemopet – we all think she is a great person who is incredibly knowledgeable on IMHA. You can do an on-line consultation via the internet – how do you think your vet will feel about that though? These things are sometimes awkward she would want all the blood results, plus any other test results.
The clavamox can have an interaction with aspirin – maybe that was why they stopped it? Metronidazole can also interact with anti-clotting meds, mycophenolate (and cyclosporine out of interest), also famotidine, but sometimes there is no choice but to give it to try to get the dog better. And I totally agree – Steve should be stable before he comes home, otherwise you will be stressed out & that doesn’t help anyone.
I have to go as our guests are arriving any moment – please keep us posted on how Steve is doing
