- Erica & Justice
Erica – Justice has the most beautiful, gentle face & I have fallen for her instantly! Is there a story to her name? I hope Chase is feeling much better now – you have a lot going on & no wonder you are shattered. Get some rest – that’s an order.
I am really concerned that you guys have some nasty infection doing the rounds in your area – it’s a bit of a coincidence having so many sick pups at once.
Love & hugs

For some reason I was unable to see the Forum on this website for several hours. I am sure an operator error.
There is a good story behind Justice’s name. Myself and my husband were both Deputy Sheriff’s at the time we got her. My neighbor had lost their Black Lab Boggy and I put up signs and flyers. I also checked animal control daily for them. Well, one day while checking the shelter for Boggy, my husband and I saw Justice. Her name was actually Dazzle. She was turned in by a family who must had had children because they took scissors and had cut patches of her fur off – maybe playing beauty shop. I would like to think that was the reason and not any form of abuse. Well, I wanted to bring her home instantly. My husband meanwhile saw a GSD and fell in love with him. We went home and talked and he said we could get both. He picked out the name Justice for the GSD. Well, when we wnt the next morning, the GSD was already adopted out. But Dazzle was still there looking at me with those beutiful eyes. He said we could still get her and agreed on the name Justice (which was what he picked out for the GSD). He later got his GSD, which we named Chase. Also…. Boggy was found! A waitress had seen my signs and called. She had a customer who was traveling through who found him and left his number. They took him to Ft. Meyers (4 hours aways). My neighbor went and picked him up and he’s still living across the street – he’s got to be 14-15 years old by now.
Justice is my favorite – I love all my dogs but she stole my heart from the very first day I saw her. I have 3 dogs. Chicita , a pitbull rescue who was on death row at only 3 months old. My husband went to a call on Ester Sunday where an elderly man noticed her as a stray and fed her ham. Well, she bite his hand and drew blood and a neighbor called the sheriff’s office. Our job was to call animal control any time a dog bite anyone. Protocol is they are in quarantine for 2 weeks and euthanized. My husband and I went in uniform the next day, Monday and asked if we could adopt the dog instead of her being put down after her quaratine. They said no, that she had 2 strikes against her – she was pure pit and she had bitten a person. After a couple weeks of bugging animal control – I didn’t even know what she looked like – they wouldn’t let me see her. They finally agreed to allow us to adopt her. So, that is our Chicita – she is 13 years old. Justice is a pit bull mix – I believe she has Johnson bull dog in her. She’s usually the Alpha female around the house. She still is, even sick. She just has to look at the other two and they know she means business. And then there is Chase, our GSD. You would think the German Shepherd dog would be the Alpha female but she’s not. Maybe because Justice already put a claim on the title before she ever came around. So that is the story of Justice’s name. Sorry if it was a long one.
Valley, I would love a medicine chart from you! This is our current schedule:
Omeprazole 20 me 2 caps every 24 hours 5pm
15mg Aspirin at 5pm
Prednisone 20mg 2 tablets (2× daily) 6 am and 6pm
Doxycyclin 125mg 2 capsules twice a day (4 total) 6 am and 6pm
Azathioprine 50 mg (1 1/2 tablet) every 24 hours (6pm)
Carafate 1 mg every 8 hours (4am, 12 noon, 8pm)
I have been giving her large meals at 10 am and 6pm (2 hours before and 2 hours after a Carafate dose). I overslept – past my alarm this morning and only 1 hour went by between the Carafate and her 6 am meds. I beat myself up all day because of it. She has had a sluggish day and even urinated on herself in her sleep. I keep thinking it is because I didn’t wait 2 hours. The original vet actually put 30 mins on the label – but I did research after you said 2 hours and you were right on! I would have been going by the 30 min label had you not told me.
She really gets alert for food. It really drives her. I have been giving her boiled chicken and rice with a little bit of her normal dry kibble. I did buy a can of Alpo which I noticed doesn’t agree with her tummy – she had soft stool after I gave her a lot one night. I use bites of it cold to coax her outside to pee. Her favorite treat is her MILK BONES. I don’t know if she should be eating them. They are the large size from Sams Club. She will get up and go to the pantry wagging her nub (she has no tail, poor baby) when she hears them. They have always been her favorite. Any suggestions on that?
Thank you again for your help!
Hi Erica
Thank you for sharing the story of your lovely pups – I so enjoyed reading about them all & the compassion you have. Can we see a picture of them all please? You & your other half are just the best – the most kind & generous people on earth. I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for these sweet & much (wrongly) maligned dogs.
Our site has been upgraded, so was down for a while – not operator error. If you ever have an urgent problem, e-mail one of us directly if the site is down – don’t hesitate.
Incontinence is very common, especially with the girlies. The pred causes muscle weakness, but they do get much better as time goes by. Any UTI will cause incontinence & the pred doesn’t help at all either because their muscles lose tone. Even my boy got dribbly & was frantic to get in the garden – very, very urgent to pee! What’s a couple of pee-pee accidents with this nasty thing? Nothing to worry about, I say.
Although it is best to keep the diet high protein & low fat, I really don’t see much wrong with a few treats! Life is about enjoyment, isn’t it? They do get really piggy greedy with the pred though & they really do need a lot of extra food, otherwise they start losing a lot of muscle mass. I warn you, they do all lose muscle & start looking a bit emaciated – don’t be surprised if this happens – it’s happened to most of us.
I am not familiar with the brands you mention, but I bet a lot of other people are. Good quality lowish fat meat is the best thing if you can find the time to do this for her – not easy, I know. High fat is not good for them with these drugs – they are at higher risk from pancreatitis, although my dog Worzel tolerated azathioprine really well – it saved his life actually. It tends to be the smaller breeds who have a problem as a rule. But you do need to keep a close eye on Justice, in case she has a problem.
You must NEVER beat yourself up about anything – we have all made daft mistakes, including me, with the meds – it is so easy to miss something when you are very tired. And you will be very tired. I don’t think I really slept properly for a few months either, so you must forgive yourself for being shattered.
I know Vally will be making you a chart – she is just the best at this, but she is in Australia, so we are sometimes asleep/awake at different times.
Sending huge hugs & much love to all your lovely family – plus a special gentle hug for sweet Justice

Erica, oh don’t ever beat yourself up about forgetting things – there’s a lot going on right now. I remember ever so carefully shoving those tablets down Bingo’s throat, only to find on cleaning later there’s a dried up tablet sitting on the floor. Now is it prednisone or thyroxine? Who knows. It was part mush so I wasn’t game enough to take a guess. Then there’s the lovely chart I’ll make up for you, with the pen and the tablets sitting there. Now did I just give the prednisione, then why didn’t I cross it out? I’m sure I just gave it!!! Think Vally, think!!!
Oh I’d love to see a picture of your 3 girls too. I’ll make up a chart and send it through.

Hi Erica. I love your stories. I have rescued a few pups myself. And the inhuman treatment of any animal crushes my heart. If one is in need and he’s roaming, he or she will most likely end up in my car – a drink of water and then figure out what to do. :)
Sadie has had some bad incontinence with this relapse. I have continued to use the Pampers (she has no tail either). She actually rolls over for me to put them on. Pretty funny. As we are weaning her (her PCV yesterday was 42, yeah!!!), I am hoping and thinking it will get better. With prior onset and her other two relapses (don’t panic, this is rare, convinced that the weaning her too fast set her up for future relapses), she has had accidents on the high dose immune suppressants, but this is different. She is just standing there and all the sudden her entire back end and legs are wet. She has no idea that it even happened. And, of course, once she is aware, is embarrassed. We just get a bath more often! :)
I hope Justice is doing well. I love that you have rescued the three pooches. They are very lucky to have your love and care.
Let us know how she’s doing and yes, pics of ALL. Love and hugs, Linda and Sadie
