They are putting him on leflunomide, please can anyone tell me what the side affects are for this drug, because you can bet your bottom dollar Louis will suffer the worst of them.
20mg x 5 all at once per day.
Hi Karyn
Thyroxine time – please could you remind your vet about the papers & research I sent you a while back (I will send again) as I think it should be tried – you have to try something.
We haven’t had many dogs on leflunomide, so will look up some info on side effects – looks like generally GI problems /inappetance . Any chance of your vet contacting Dr Dodds again???

Hi Karyn.
Dylan is on leflunomide. He’s my 27 pound Mini Schnauzer. My vet added it to his prednisone (20mg 1.5 per day). He’s also on some homeopathic things.
Dose of the leflunomide is 1.5 mg per day (20 mg). Within a couple days of adding it his energy and sense of spunk returned. And his hematocrit went back up to 27 percent from 19.
Upon first dosing he seemed a little lethargic. He also has IBD and I was concerned about that but his stool was great. He does get a Pepcid before each meal.
Feel free to ask me more Q’s.
Hang in there
Kathleen
Hi Karan , so sorry to her Louis s Pcv has gone down ,sending you huge hugs, I do hope your vet will be taking notice of Dr Jean Dobbs, she knows her stuff and what have you got to loose? I know it’s hard with these vets sometimes , I have changed vets several times till I have found a great vet who actually listen s at the same practice we go to , please give Louis a huge cuddle from me, keep your chin up, you are doing a great job! xx xxxx love Jill & Snoops
Hi Karyn
Great to hear from Kathleen who’s using leflunomide & has seen the side effects & a rise in PCV – always better to hear owner’s experiences for sure – sounding GOOOD!!!! Let’s look on the bright side & Louis will not get any side effects this time.
Thank you so much Kathleen for helping with this – much appreciated.

I put the thyroid and hematopoesis paper up in the canine hypothyroidism resources.

Click on the picture of the molecule colored in purple. Best I can do today as I am busy with several things. This will open the reference material as a pdf, expand it to open for a full page to print and save.
My best Patrice
Thank you so much to everyone who has commented, and it’s good to hear from you Kathleen that you’ve got experience with leflunomide.
We’ve had to take Louis to see our local vet tonight because he has chronic diarrhea. He’s put him on antibiotics. So we wont be starting the leflunomide until that’s under control.
I’ve also sent Stefano all Dr Dodds paperwork again and what you have sent me Sheena and told him I want/demand him to prescribe thyroxine, if he wont I will find someone who will because we have nothing left to try.
Louis is going downhill fast and it feels like we cannot stop him. I’m devastated and I’m also very angry which is daft, but he has to listen with me now, I will get my hands on thyroxine somehow.
Love Karyn
