Dewey had appointment today! Full blood panel was done and everything looks great. Liver is slightly elevated but Dr said its normal with pred use. His Cbc went down slightly to 33, which Dr is not concerned about. He wants to keep all mess the same for another week. If he drops again cyclo will be added back in and pred will be tapered. Ultrasound shows everything looking good. Just wanted to let you know the update! Fingers and paws crossed!!
Marla and Dewey
Just wondering if anyone could offer any advice. I’m reading quite a few other posts and reading that their pet was diagnosed with this disease and seem to bounce back up rather quickly. This has been over 4 months with Dewey and he is still not at a Normal range in his pcv. His highest was 35, then 34, and now 33. Are we doing something wrong? Why can’t he get up over 35? Is he just never going to return to his normal self? I know this can be a long journey and I am prepared for that. It just makes me wonder how some that were recently diagnosed can be “normal” now and back to their lives. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!! Thank you in advance!!
Hey Marla, I’m sure it’s taking it’s toll Dewey not pushing those numbers up for you. There’ll never be an answer to that. Some dogs recover quickly some dogs just don’t and it takes some time.
Bingo’s PCV sat in the low 30s for at least 2 months, testing him weekly, so it was thought that may be HIS new normal. But in fact after a bit of time that started moving up again.
Do you have any blood tests that you could send through? That might show something.
What about his meds. What is he on now? Does he still take thyroxine? I know you’ve stopped the cyclosporine. I always found that whenever something was reduced, there always seemed to be a drop immediately afterwards.
Hang in there Marla.

Hi all
Dewey is up to 37.5!!! I can’t believe it!! We are now doing Imuran every second day and no cyclo in his system. I do have a question for my ” experts” though. Has anyone ever run into their babies “stinking”? This horrible smell is coming from Dewey’s ears! The vet checked for infection and his ears were clean and clear. Is this possibly from the meds that he’s on?? The smell isn’t constant either. It comes and goes, and I wash his ears with puppy ear cleaner once in a while but does not seem to help! If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know!!!
Take care!!
Hi Marla
Lovely to hear the news! He is doing great & I’m so pleased for you. I’ve not come across the smelly ears myself, but maybe someone else has. If the vet has checked them, that’s fine. Just keep an eye & take him in if anything looks irritated or inflamed.
Worzel always smelled sweet & “wheaty” – when he was on the pred he didn’t smell like that any more – then when we weaned him off, he started smelling sweet again, so maybe it is the meds? Don’t know. What’s a smelly ear between friends anyway! As long as Dewey is fine & his PCV is improving, that’s OK.
