As we were talking about NexGard again, I wondered if anyone had experience or knowledge about the fairly new flea & tick treatment Bravecto. From the manufacturer’s research/information leaflet & the FDA information, there are no dangerous side effects listed, although transient (temporary) diarrhoea & vomiting, lethargy, flatulence & drinking more water have been reported. Only one case of edema & lip swelling was reported The research says it is safe for dogs with the MDR1 gene e.g. breeds such as border collies, german shepherds (unlike many other products which we already know can be dangerous).
I am always wary of anything that is systemic (a pill or other treatment that has to be swallowed) as it is therefore in the bloodstream, rather than the traditional topical (on the skin) applications, but I am also keen to find an effective yet safe treatment for IMHA/AIHA dogs. There are no haematological side effects reported on the two documents I read. The risk of our pets catching diseases from fleas & ticks is always uppermost in my mind too. Do any of you know anything more about this product or have any opinions?
Thanks!
Sheena
Oh Sheena – would that not be wonderful. Both Vally and I are struggling in the heat (here in FL, all year long, really). I looked at their website and see that it lasts for 12 weeks (on two tick types, 8 weeks on the other) AND kills fleas/ticks after 12 hours.
I am so afraid of using anything at all. I will see how treating Sadie goes along in the next month or so. I have been using the diatomaceous earth (yard, bed and under our bed, rugs), holistic flea shampoo AND the same brand (Richard’s) flea spray. I spray it on her brush and brush her chest, legs, feet, head and ears quickly before we walk – quick swipe. It’s better than before (you know the tapeworm dilemma – nasty fleas!) so, for a while, I’ll stick with this and see what happens. I STILL want to buy some flea traps (thanks Vally – had never heard of them) to put around.
I will ask my vet next Monday (PCV) and let you know her thoughts. In a perfect world – this would be great to have a once every three month pill – but I’m still leary……
Love and hugs to your boys, Worzel and Ollie, from Sadie and me xoxoxoxoxo
