What a great idea Vally! I need to remember this as Ashki’s hips are just awful and I worry so much about the pred and its effects.
Maura, it’s so wonderful to see you. Sending you many hugs.
love,
tamara and ashki xoxox
Vally – finger still in the splint, so have not been on forum much. This is a hoot. And I agree with Sheena – Bingo looks awesome. I love both videos. You’re good to improvise – soda cans. Good thinking! And he listens to you – “over there” and he knows when you point. Smart, ever-so-cute, boy. And I think your videoing ability is great! :)
I am sorry to hear about the hind legs getting worse though. How is the new vet coming along? And are you still giving him the GLM’s? Sheena – are you too?
Sadie is creaking so badly and with her prednisone down to 2.5mg’s a day now – it may be me imaging it – I think it’s getting worse. But as she’s low on all meds, I still would like to introduce the GLM’s. It’s just that the good ol’ USA doesn’t really know about them (yet) and very hard to find. What I do find, I’m not sure about. Oh well.
Please give Mr. Agility a huge hug and lots of kisses from us! We love you Bingo!
Linda and Sadie
Hi Linda, I’m sorry Sadie is creaking. Yes I noticed that as the pred went down, Bingo did show different arthritic symptoms.
I think with my persistence and his long suffering, his legs seem to be a bit better with all the 3 legged stands and ramp work. He hates the 3 legged stands and he is made to do them a whole 2 times a day to his utter annoyance. The physio corrected the way I was doing them before in that I’m now holding his back knee joint in place while I lift up one of his other legs. The physio showed me that the way I was doing them before (not holding the knee in place), the knee simply popped out each time I lifted a leg. So I’ve noticed, whilst his knee still often does pop out, it does seem to be doing it less than before.
Now the ramp work, he LOVES because every single time he walks up he gets a treat. I can sometimes fool him into thinking I’ve tossed one down the ramp and he goes down to find it, but he turns straight around and comes up the ramp again to get his treat. I realised how many times I say “look” in that video. How embarrassing. But “look” is one of his favourite words. He knows that there’s a treat somewhere when I say it.
Yes, I like his new local vet. She’d be in her 50s (I think), originally studied and practiced in Germany and has been in practice here for 20 years. It’s a 2 vet practice and that’s very important for me. I was so very very tired of dealing with new vets (often young vets) every time we went in for something locally. We spent a good 40 minutes going over his history and character and I feel better knowing she’s getting to know Bingo. She suggested weekly Vitamin B injections for 4 weeks, to hopefully help with his energy and staggers , which were still happening almost daily, although very mildly – always at night again. They did go away after his first Complex Vitamin B shot for a week, but last week, after his second shot (which was only a B12), I saw a stagger and he seemed quieter again, so this last Tuesday he got the Complex B injection again. He was full of beans tonight, playing with his blanket until he’s so hot and panting, he has me freaking and confiscating them so he’ll settle down – I cannot be pleased :)
She went through all his supplements and said they’re all good and to leave them. She believes in pulse dosing with vitamin supplements, so he now doesn’t get any over the weekend. She also said we may change a few around in the future but to leave everything for now.
She also does homeopathy – studied this in Germany, so she’s one of very few certified homeopathic vets in Australia. So Bingo is also taking drops at the moment to see if we can make him less stressed, insecure and I think also to help with the staggers.
With the green lipped mussels, yes they are very available here, but I did find them on Amazon at
The ingredients as far as I can see, seem to be 500mg of New Zealand GLM only, nothing else. That may be an option . Bingo still takes 2 x 500mg a day which is a lot for a dog his size, but only side effect is likely to be sloppy poos. Now I know that could be an issue for Sadie, you don’t want to upset her tummy. I’d probably try 1/2 capsule a day to start with to make sure it doesn’t upset her tummy. My other favourites would be gelatin (thank you Lynn) and turmeric. Turmeric is supposed to be good for stomach ailments, but some dogs are sensitive to it, so again, try teensy bits of anything before really adding in full strength.
Love Vally & Ramp Champ
Ah Vally, I love this video! You are both so patient.
I’m glad to hear his staggers have settled a little. Have you made any recent alterations to his pred? It’s very interesting that you’ve noticed a difference with the B12 vitamins. Your new vet sounds awesome. I like our vets, but as you said, we often end up seeing a different one and sometimes it is nice to see the same person.
Keep up the great work!
Mary and Mable x
Mary and Mable, when all the staggers started, I upped his pred dose and he now remains on 1.25mg a day. He may just stay there.
I do like this new vet. I feel she understands how weird I am. I apologised to her that I’m so super paranoid. She laughed and said I’m a vet’s dream come true – well I guess that’s true.
My boy seems to have lost a lot of hearing over the last few months and I’ve wondered whether he may have the beginnings of dementia. This new vet said there’s definitely hearing loss but she doesn’t feel there’s any real dementia signs.
He’s been super super sensitive lately and jumps at the littlest things. I guess the loss of hearing could have a lot to do with that. It’s so very easy to just walk up to him and he doesn’t realise anyone is there and he get’s startled. So he’s been spending a lot of time under his favorite lounge chair where he can watch the world in safety. Of course, that means his legs get lazier and lazier.
A few nights ago, he woke me up as he was moving a lot. He was licking his front paws and the blankets and just kept doing this. He wouldn’t settle. I THINK what happened is, with the window open, the curtains started to move and he’s gotten scared. This happened the following night as well. Anyhow, vet suggested using an Adaptil diffuser plug in. So I plugged this in on Tuesday night and he slept like a lamb.
The 4 vitamin B shots are now done, but vet and I both agree, another 2 might be good so more to come. Staggers are still happening, but not as constant. His energy levels go up and down, so that’s why I like the idea of another 2.
Love to all, Vally & Expensive.
The wretch is now wearing a placard that says “No food, just Treats”. He’s been a real buggar the last few days in that he’s decided treats taste nicer than food. He’ll just look at his bowl of food with this forlorn expression and then walk slowly away and head for the laundry where the “real” food is.
I’ve ended up in desperation hand feeding him a couple of times in the morning as I need to leave for work and he sufferingly takes it if hand fed, saying he’s not really hungry. After he’s finished of course, he’s off to the laundry because he can squeeze a few of those in. There’s also the muesli biscuits in the fridge that he’ll remind me off – constantly!!!
Why!!!!!
Vally & Forlorn
Oh Bingo. Mable likes her treats too. I’m sorry that his hearing isn’t so good, and I expect that you are right that this is why he is getting easily spooked. Animals are so amazing at adapting though. It’s interesting that he responded well to the Adaptil. I tried Feliway, which I think is the feline version, for Molly when she had cystitis. It didn’t make the slightest difference but lots of people swear by it. Do you know how the Adaptil works? I think Feliway is a synthetic pheromone.
Having a vet who understands weirdness is great! Mine are pretty good (lots of Aussies!) but I would prefer not to keep seeing someone different, mainly because I always have to tell them about Molly and then always cry – it’s easier not to keep going back to the beginning. Does Bingo have the whole lot of B vitamins? I remember you slightly increasing his pred, and I guess that if he isn’t suffering with the side effects then maybe it doesn’t matter if you keep him on it?
Bingo – please eat your dinner like a good boy ;)
