- Benny's Fight for life
Update on Benny. We are in the process of decreasing his prednisone. So far his PVV count is up to 48%. I am a bit concerned because my vet feels we should still proceed with his Lymes vaccine and rabies at some point in the future while he is on the auto immune drugs. Has anyone experienced this or know anything about risks. I still need to discuss this further with my vet but wanted some input from people that have gone through this.
Wow, 48! Happy Dance! Congrats!
I too am concerned about vaccines. Since we are not out of the woods yet, I have not discussed it with our specialist. However, I know our dog licenses are up for renewal with the city any day now and they are likely going to want proof of an update.
In the very back of my mind, I have already been trying to come up with a way where we do not end up fugitives–As I am extremely reluctant about updating.
I’m not sure where you are located Jodi .. but I’m in the U.S. when Flossie was diagnosed I was living on the west coast in CA ..since we have moved cross country to MO ..both my internal medicine vet in CA and our vet here in MO have said absolutely no vaccines whatsoever throughout the remainder of Flossies life. They both only want her Titer Tested every 3 years. There are states that do require a rabies with no options and other states that say if the dog has medical issues that can be complicated by the vaccine then they can be excused from it. My vet here in MO asked me if I planned on boarding Flossie or sending her to daycare as they would most likely require vaccines .. but I don’t have a need for those services so she said then it isn’t necessary.
Also On lyme vaccine .. I think if you google about that vaccine it doesn’t stop your dog from getting lyme disease it’s been a while since I read about it ,, but it’s a vaccine that just is a no go like vaccinating for heart worm.
Here is a very informative article on lyme disease and lyme vaccines: http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/lyme-disease-and-lyme-vaccine-disease/

Sara and Flossie
Oh and all that concern of mine over the vaccines and I forgot my Big Woohoo “48” is Awesome !!!! Go Benny !!!!
Sara. Thank you so much for the information. I am located in Pennsylvania…..” the tick state”. I will definitely check further with some specialists and will need to see if he can be exempt from the rabies vaccine according to our state. I think I am going to research the Lymes disease vaccine to see if it would even be beneficial. Benny already contracted Lymes and was currently being treated for it when he got sick! I am concerned that it may become active again. So much to consider, all I know is we have made it this far and I am not willing to jeopardize his health!!! Thanks again for your follow up and will keep updating as I find out more information.
Hi Jodi and Benny! First of all YAY!! 48 is so great! Please excuse my lame rhyme :) I really want to second Sara’s advice. My dog Murphy was diagnosed in November and it was 6 weeks after he got his rabies and distemper vaccines at the same time. When I asked my vet (after talking with all of those more knowledgeable than myself on this site) if the vaccines could have caused Murphy’s IMHA he said absolutely and we will not ever vaccinate him again. We are in Indiana, but he said a note from our vet stating he has an autoimmune disease will suffice for legal purposes.
Not sure if this is helpful, it’s a double edged sword, as tick borne illness like Lyme disease can cause IMHA. Just wanted to share our experience.

Also, there are vaccine resources on this website, including Dr.Dodds minimal vaccine schedule, which discusses drawing titers in place of additional vaccinations. It’s under the resources tab, it’s all very helpful!!
