- Ashki – new thread
Hi Tamara. That’s interesting about them vet wanting to take Steve off the Soloxine. Refresh my memory – was he put on Soloxine due to low thyroid? So, the test they’re doing should tell you. When I put Sadie on Thyroxine (although, the one you use, Soloxine is the premier drug, so says Dr. Dodds), she went into a stupper, totally changed her personality – within a week. We tested her and her tyroid was elevated, so I took her off the Thyroxine totally. She was back to herself and her tyroid levels were within normal range after about a week. It freaked me out though. She was acting as bad, if not worse, than AIHA onset. We still test her with every CBC and she is fine on the thyroid front. But, I did think it was interesting that your vet wants to take Steve off. Have you checked with Dr. Dodds? She wanted to lower with Sadie, but I just took her off completely. Again, she’s fine. But that’s her. You’ll have to weigh all the facts, of course, for Steve.
And the PCV – of course you panic. We all do/did. I still do when it drops by more than two-three points. But it truly is a matter of many things, too much water, not enough water, do they need too tee-tee, poop (slight stress from holding it), or what ever.
Also, with every weaning dose, the first PCV after was lower. Then it would bounce back and even better most times. She has done markedly better in her PCV since weaning. We test again on Wednesday, before travel. Here’s hoping!
Good luck with all this. I will be thinking of you. Sending our love and hugs,
Linda and Sadie
Thank you so much Sheena. I’m doing better today, was definitely having a bad day there. Ashki continues to feel well and is eating well. OH I forgot to tell you all — he gained a pound!! That made me happy.
much love, tamara and sweet ashki
Hi Tamara
Gaining a pound made me jump round the room for joy when Worzel was a mess – so I’m jumping around the room for you & sweet boy Ashki right now! The dogs are looking at me like I’m a nutcase of course. Eating anything at all was a huge improvement for Worzel at one stage, so I understand just how elated you feel. Brilliant! All these little improvements are worth their “weight” in gold. Just one comment – he wouldn’t put weight on if he were hyperthyroid (they would lose weight if hyper & can be a bit hyperactive/daft too), so I personally would continue with the soloxine unless Jean Dodds thinks otherwise. I say this because hypothyroidism is definitely a cause of anaemia – absolute fact – and thyroxine is haemopoeitic as you know. The more reticulocytes that pop out that marrow, the better!
Cuddles to both of you from all of us, Sheena & the happy boys xxxx
No worries Linda :D . I hope your preparations for your trip are going well!
Linda and Sheena, I agree completely, there’s no way I’m taking Ashki off soloxine unless it comes back high, especially since the bone marrow needs it. I think the internist is convinced the proteinuria is due to hyperthyroid, as too much thyroid hormone can affect the kidneys negatively. I will be very surprised if the results come back high, but having said that, it certainly would be a potentially easy fix. As you say Sheena, it would be very unlikely that he would be gaining weight either, especially given all these drugs, etc.
I haven’t checked with Dr. Dodds because I’m pretty sure I know what she would say — that it’s unlikely, but he’s due to test levels so let’s do that.
I think part of what was hard about the PCV drop is Ashki had been feeling SO well, I completely expected it to be higher so when it was lower it just felt crushing. But then I am also remembering that when his PCV went down to 16 this last time I was also confused because he had been feeling better, and lo and behind 2 days later it was up to 20!
We go in tomorrow for CBC, chemistry and PCV check. I’m really hoping to have the thyroid results back for that appointment, we should.
love and hugs to you all, please give Sadie a kiss from me Linda and tell her I said I hope she has a lovely vacation. Oh and you too! Cuddles to those boys Sheena.

Thank you Vally. Good news — Ashki’s PCV is 27 today!!!! I am really really happy. I am taking him in Wednesday morning and we are going to do pre- and post – bile acids to check on his liver, I am very relieved to be doing that. Ashki is doing well, resting now — it’s tiring making all those RBCs!
much love and many hugs — tamara and ashki xoxoxox
