- Ashki – new thread
LOL Vally! I’ll let you know when the CD is ready :) .
Ashki’s PCV was 26 today, yay! And he gained half a pound! The mucous is just mucous, no bacteria, no weird cells. Ashki digs after gophers in the background and sticks his nose in the hole and SNIFFS to smell them — so we think it’s just from that. But we’re going to continue to watch.
Urinalysis is negative, and culture is negative so far, final results tomorrow.
Poor boo is hungry hungry hungry. And continues to be kind of bored. Both of which I think are good things.
love and hugs to you all from tamara and ashki
Hey Tamara and Mr Ashki!!
Wonderful news all around –26% is awesome!!! Go head, little baby rbc’s!! I’m glad his nose goblins are just that.. I’m sure you’re watching him super close too.
I totally sympathize with you about the food and boredom thing — Steve is ravenous all the time. I can’t get him even satisfied, he just wants to eat anything and everything. And I feel bad too bc he’s bored but like you said I guess these are good things.
thinking of y’all!!
Xoxo hope, Steve and JWBean
Hi Tamara
Good news! I’m so pleased to hear that Ashki is hanging in there and building that PCV up! Also a relief about the mucus, and good results on his urinalysis and culture. A day to smile, I think :)
How are you keeping up with the cooking? (I’ll be on the next plane over ;) ). Are you managing to get much rest yourself? And your eye infection – all better?
Yes, I agree that Ashki being bored and hungry are good things. A sign of a pup who has a thirst for life! I’m so pleased he enjoyed his drive and visiting the intern. You are doing such a fantastic job with him.
I’d like a copy of the CD too, please.

So some not so good news — I heard from the vet and Ashki’s kidneys are struggling again. I’ll be moving him back to Dr. Dodds’ kidney diet that she sent me. I’ve been corresponding with Callie and she says that cyclo is especially hard on the kidneys. But the good news — Ashki’s liver values are all normal now, hooray!! I’ve also gotten some information from other friends who have had kidney dogs, and the holistic vet sent us home today with a kidney supplement.
I have had a wonderful lift too, a friend of mine set up a go fund me page for us, and many are helping, I am so thankful and so humbled to see how many want to help Ashki and me.
I am keeping up with the cooking, barely Mary lol! And you are always welcome, as is darling Mable. Today it was pork (recommended by Dr Dodds for the kidney diet) and eggs and potatoes.
thank you all for your love and support, love and hugs coming from here to you all —
tamara and ashki
Hi Tamara
Really pleased to see Ashki’s PCV is 26! Great news on the liver front too – this has really cheered me up.I am sorry about the kidney results though & Dr Dodd’s kidney diet will surely help – you should be on Master Chef for Dogs! I honestly couldn’t believe how much food Worzel got through on the pred – he just scoffed & scoffed, which is lovely when they haven’t had much of an appetite beforehand. He did put a bit of weight on but his muscles didn’t recover until we reduced the pred though.
I wanted to mention EPO (erythropoeitin) which people with kidney problems often need to keep their red cell count adequate. There are some dogs who have been on the doggy form of EPO. The kidneys monitor oxygen levels in the blood & are also responsible for producing EPO to stimulate red cell production, as you probably know. Just thought it might be worth discussing whether this might help Ashki with Dr Dodds, if you haven’t already.
Please give Ashki a big hug & scrubble his ears from Auntie Sheena! You are such a great Mum, Tamara.
Love from all of us xxxxx
Ashki, sticking your nose where it’s not wanted is not good.
A PCV of 26 is very good though.
Tamara, does Ashki get any fish oil? I’ve read that it could help with kidney issues, but please check first if you’re not already using it. It’s fish body oil, not liver oil.
Regards, Vally & Bingo
Hi Tamara. I’m thinking the good (PCV of 26!!! And the normal liver values! Awesome!!!) outweighs the bad news here and the kidney thing is just to keep you on your toes. No relaxing right?!! It’s okay, you’re so on top of all this! I’m checking out Sheena’s (always spot on) advice about the erythropoietin, as I am not familiar with it. Thanks Sheena!!!
Tamara, you have been and continue to be awesome with all your research, reaching out AND doing what is needed to get and keep Ashki going forward. Incredible fur mom!!! I am glad that your friend started a fund and that you hopefully can find some financial help. Touching how people are there when you least expect it, isn’t it? :)
Are the vets thinking that a maintinenace will be needed for Ashki’s kidneys? I’m sorry if I missed it, if he’s on something now. I am so impressed about the ‘cooking’ – you should prepare and sell!!! :)
Callie was a huge help with Sadie, particularly because her own cocker spaniel, Billy, had similar issues with the needed medications and necessary counter supplements. It was Callie that suggested I start Sadie on milk thistle and SAM-e AND the slippery elm cocktail (you have that recipe right?). She suggested a holistic vet also, and the one I found was awesome. I just couldn’t keep up with a $600.00 holistic vet bill every visit, so I had to stop taking Sadie.
I hope you’re getting some rest and that you’re feeling better too. As always, thinking of you both. Please keep us posted.
Love and huge hugs to you both, Linda and Sadie
