- Ashki – new thread
Of course, here is Dr. Dodds discussion:
http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/doddsnutrition.html
Brigitte, no worries about hijacking, I am very interested in nutrition. Thank you all for the terrific information. I, too, have Ian Billinghurst’s book, and used to juice for my dogs many years ago. I would feed mostly turkey necks for the same reason Brigitte, the GSD would swallow the chicken necks and wings whole LOL. But I got away from it when I got busy. I actually made a weekly BARF tracker that was floating around the raw feeding lists for awhile, I may still have it around here somewhere, though it probably needs updating. I did supplement Sierra’s kibble with raw, and when I got Ashki raw is what got his digestion healthy again, so I am anxious for him to be well enough to feed him raw again. And this time I will not be going back to kibble. even though I fed him a very good kibble.
I have thought a fair bit about IMHA dogs and raw feeding. I do know a few people who fed raw while their dogs were being treated, and those dogs recovered quickly. Hard to know, though, if that is coincidence or not. The conventional wisdom is that raw is not a good idea because of the exposure to bacteria and fear of infection. But I wonder if, unless there is leaky gut (which there could be in Ashki’s case) that is a reasonable fear.
Re probiotics — I did see a noticeable improvement when we added probiotics, so for him that has been helpful. And it seems to be specific to this brand, which was developed by a veterinarian and has research behind it, as I did switch brands once when I ran out and I noticed a difference.
I forgot to mention, Dr. Dodds has a new book out on nutrition and her research there! I haven’t gotten it yet, I need to.
I’m very thankful, our specialist’s view on diet is whatever diet your dog does best on is the diet she recommends, and she readily acknowledges that she does not have background in that area. And she’s open to raw feeding, when I told her that Ashki’s GI problems when I first got him were straightened out on a raw diet she was very interested.
Thank you again so much for all the great info!

Hi Patrice,
thanks for feeding me more and more on that subject! Pardon the pun:) I find it so incredibly interesting. That is also why I organized that seminar with a holistic vet. Funny she used exactly the same experiment, us eating a cracker to explain about the enzymes in our saliva. She also used sesame snaps for us and large pieces of dried liver to show us how differently the jaw of people and dogs work. Ripley was happy to take part in the experiment and show how he bites off with his molars if one does not let go of the treat. Then the funny thing, Marlene showed us what it said on the sesame snap package: gluten free! Sesame seeds and honey:) She made a point about marketing (kibble). I knew kibble is not ideal but this was the first time I got a scientific explanation why. But you know all that.
Now I also understand the issue with prednisone and ulcers. I knew it was a problem but did not really know why. Always so much to learn… But now I go outside it is a beautiful sunny day!
Cheers Brigitte
Ashki’s poo has improved very well, and he’s feeling very good!! Went in today for cbc and chemistry and our vet was thrilled with how good he looks, very pink!! So hoping I have good news tomorrow, perhaps the missing piece to the Ashki puzzle is folate.
