- Ashki – new thread
Hi Tamara
My two detest dull rainy days as well – they look out the door & only want to go out for the “necessaries”! I hate these grotty days myself.
Found this vet article for you on cephalosporin – it might be the one you’ve seen:
http://vet.sagepub.com/content/25/3/211.full.pdf
In my opinion, this proves that cephalosporin has a marked effect on bone marrow in some dogs, including causing ineffective haemaotopoeisis. Maturation arrest is clearly stated too. Mitochondrial damage was found in all cell types in the biopsies.
Are all Ashki’s other blood cell types in the normal range? I think you are on to something very important & significant here, Tamara.
Good luck with the results – let’s hope you could have found the answer to this puzzle, or at least part of it.
Love, Sheena xxxxx
Hi Sheena, I haven’t had a look at that article yet, wanted to update you all ASAP. Ashki is stabilized this week!! His HCT is up to 25.4 from 24 last week. MCV is up, MCHC is down — these were normal last week but have been pretty consistently high and low respectively for some time. Anisocytosis is moderate this week. Platelets are high, have been for some time. WBC normal.
I am very relieved but of course will not feel like we are out of the woods until we have a solid trend. However, the way this has gone in the past is lots of ups and downs and I’m prepared for that.
We go back in a week and are going to do chemistry as well as a CBC, I want to check on how Ashki’s doing now that all the meds are back up. I’ll have results a week from today and will of course let you know.
Thank you so much for finding that article, I’m going to send it along to Ashki’s specialist and to Jean Dodds.
Vally, thank you and Sheena both for the feedback that your boys get gloomy with the weather too. The rain doesn’t bother Ashki at all, he actually dawdles out there and then loves to be rubbed down with a towel when he comes in.
Hope, it’s so good to hear from you! I hope Steve’s tummy is all better. I think Ashki’s spleen is ok, although maybe I’m wrong. My understanding is those dogs that benefit from a splenectomy are those with traditional IMHA, where the RBCs are being targeted and destroyed in the spleen. Ashki’s bone marrow seems to be the problem, we haven’t seen evidence of hemolysis in a really long time and even when we did it seemed like it wasn’t severe.
love to you all —

Hi Tamara
Phew! What a relief – that’s a great increase – you must be doing a very happy dance! I am relieved too as I have been worrying with you actually. Glad to be of help on the cephalosporin. I will be looking for more information for you today.
By the way, my PERSONAL opinion from my own research is that I would never even contemplate a splenectomy for IMHA. My specialist had a look of horror on his face when I mentioned it (in the days when I didn’t know very much), so that tells me something in itself! The spleen destroying abnormal cells is it’s usual job, after all, so treat the cause of the abnormal cells. I think it’s an absolute no-no unless there is disease present in the organ itself, for example with what happened to dear Chance & in the presence of hemangiosarcoma, trauma, or possibly massive enlargement. Disease of the spleen is a different matter. I have never actually come across anyone who’s dog has had a splenectomy for any reason other than disease of the organ itself, i.e. only for IMHA. I helped another lady on here with this a while back when her vet suggested removing the dog’s slightly enlarged spleen. I gave her enough help & information to convince her not to do it as the spleen was definitely not destroying blood cells inappropriately. This was blatantly obvious from the blood test results.
In the meantime, fingers crossed for the next test results – I am over the moon that Ashki has made such a great improvement
Sending loads of love & hugs

Oh Tamara – Busy and absent – but keeping up as best I can with the holidays and children home (shopping, cooking, cleaning – the mom drill). Had to write and tell you that you absolutely made my Christmas already!!! This is the best of news. I am so dog-gone happy for you and Ashki. Way to go and keep it up Ashki. Huge, huge smiles!!!

Linda and doing pretty good herself, Sadie
Hi all — Ashki’s hematocrit is down a point this week, but I’m not horribly concerned for two reasons. Well, three. One — his reticulocytes are at 33k, higher than they’ve been in 6 months! Two — he felt lousy this week, his tummy has been bothering him, and I wonder if he had a small bleed. I’ve split the pred up into two 20mg doses and added another sucralfate. Three — this is how his progress goes, up, down, up, down. We go for a PCV in a week.
Sending you all wishes for a lovely holiday season filled with comfort and peace, and also sending much love, many hugs, and so much gratitude for you all.
