- Ashki – new thread
Hi Tamara
Frustration, frustration. What a pain in the … that his PCV is 27. OK, they can manage perfectly well at this level, but you must be really fed up with this. I am glad to hear you have every possible option for help. Macrocytosis & polychromasia is a pretty good indication that there are new RBCs which is GOOD news, as you rightly say, his bone marrow is trying very hard.
You are doing an incredible job with Ashki. No-one could do more to get this sorted out & your determination to get him better shines through every message you write. There has to be a solution.
Please let us know what the other vets think – I will be thinking of you & sweet Ashki as always & hoping you get some good suggestions from UC David & Dr Dodds. I continue to hate this disease with a vengeance, as do we all.
Sending love, cuddles & best possible wishes
Sheena, Worzel & Ollie xxxx
Dear Tamara
I’m so sorry to read that Ashki isn’t picking up yet, but yes I think it’s a very good idea to get the advice of Dr Dodds and the UC Davis specialists. I’ve got a feeling that Ashki has the same condition that Sheena’s Worzel and my Molly had, although I have never seen Molly’s records so am not exactly sure at what point the bone marrow was failing. It sounds like there are a lot of positives though and that Ashki is fighting this, which is so important.
Are you still testing his urine? And if so, how has that been? And have you put the cycle back up yet?
Thinking of you and Ashki and sending loads of love.

Hi Mary, Vally, and Sheena, thanks so much. I will definitely let you all know how it all goes. I am also talking to a woman who took her IMHA dog to Davis on the phone tomorrow to get her take on the care she received. Mary, I was testing Ashki’s urine every other day or so and was getting the same results so I have quit, although I did take a sample in late this past week to have a UPC done so we could have that information before we put the cyclo back up. I should have that information back early this week. We did put it back up the following day, it’s now been 2 days that it’s back up to the original amount.
He continues to do well. It has been very rainy here, hard to get any walks in so he’s been staying in the garden. He did decide that he didn’t like me collecting his urine and so was holding it (!) — the brat. At least I think that’s what it was as when I took him on a walk he would pee (I hadn’t been collecting on a walk, just when he was in the garden) and now he seems back to normal. Silly boy, but good to know that’s what he’ll do.
Sending love and hugs back to you all, scritchies to the four-leggeds.

Yes, 0.4 mg twice daily. He started out on 0.5, the first specialist reduced it to 0.3 because of the kidney issues, I argued to put it back up but the second specialist only put it back up to 0.4 so then about 6 weeks later I had it tested at Jean’s office and it came back that was a good level, she gave the okay to k eep it there and retest in a year but I’ll test sooner of course :)
Hi Tamara. I have so been thinking of you and Ashki. Sorry I haven’t posted.
At one point, Dr. Dodds wanted Sadie on Thyroxine. And then, for some reason, we ended up putting her on Soloxine. Is one better than the other and/or is there a reason to use one over the other? We took Sadie off after a week, as both had an adverse reaction with her – threw her off the charts the other way.
I hope Ashki is doing well. Please hang in there – you are such an awesome fur mom to Ashki. Your diligence is amazing. Mr. Ashki is one lucky boy.
Know we think of you always and are sending our love. Linda and Sadie
Hi all, not good news here, Ashki’s HCT was down again from 27 to 24. I spent all day writing a very long email to Dr. Dodds; I didn’t do it last week as I hoped Ashki would stabilize. Our specialist sent an email to Dr. Sykes at Davis to get her input, so we are waiting for replies from both of them. We did add metronizadole back into the mix, I had asked Patrice about Chance and that, as the last time Ashki was regenerative he was on it. We also are doubling his pred, to 40mg/day. He continues to be pretty well, a little less energetic today but still keeping an eye on the neighborhood. I’ll try to upload a pic so you can see. I’m going to go back and re-read about late stage maturation arrest tomorrow.
Linda, for some reason I’m remembering that soloxine is desirable, but now I’m not sure if I’m making that up :)
Sending you all love and hugs, and scritchies for the four-leggeds.
