- Ashki – new thread
Hi Tamara
The reason for my worrying about advising you was that I picked up on the moderate spherocytes on 8th May blood test BUT these could be because of the transfusion – I don’t know what dates Ashki has been transfused on – info for you https://ahdc.vet.cornell.edu/clinpath/modules/rbcmorph/sphero.htm
I also read the pathology section at the end of some of the tests & “possible haemolysis” was mentioned – that’s why I didn’t want to say anything (I am always very cautious!) without you speaking to Dr Dodds first. I am really relieved she is happy – what a weight off your mind too. You’re right about Dr Dodds – she is the fount of all knowledge & I have total faith in her- I had no idea about magnesium & sheep! I wonder if we’ll ever get a sheep on here?
Worzel’s neutrophils & monocytes were also erratic, which worried me as well, especially as he had an infection – it’s no wonder haematologists have to train for so many years. Most of all though, it was the weight loss that was most frightening. I try hard to keep him slightly fatter now, just in case, but he will only eat what he wants to (he’s never been greedy), unlike Ollie who would eat until he’s sick!
I am crossing everything possible for some good numbers for Ashki – he’s really turned a big corner on the retics front & you’re a wonderful Mum. Please let us know how he’s doing & give him a cuddle from Auntie Sheena!
Love & all the best wishes in the world, Sheena, Slim & Glutton xxx
Hi Tamara. Just checking to see how Ashki did on the PCV today? He’s doing so well and it’s all because of your continued open mind and infinite acquired knowledge – he’s one lucky doggie to have you for his fur mom. Hope you’re continuing to do well too. Stress does wear us down, doesn’t it?!! We are thinking of you both.
Love and atta girl/boy hugs! Linda & Sadie
Thank you! PCV 20 today – I’ll take it! I’m on my phone so more detail later. We go in again Monday.
Ashki sends wags and hugs (he’s a leaner and that’s how he hugs :) )

Thank you all so much. We are hanging in there. I took Ashki to the beach last night to see his beloved sitter Heather and he was SO excited and happy to see her. It really lifted his spirits, and he loves the beach. I just take him there and sit with him, no walking to preserve his energy.
Poor boo, his face is so thin from the meds, and he has lost so much strength in his hind end. But his spirit is incredible.
He continues to eat well. I’m feeling better, have been sleeping better and feeling cautiously optimistic that he has maintained 20. I’ve been re-reading some of my favorite books as that’s comforting to me and I stay in one spot, otherwise Ash just follows me around and I don’t want him getting up and down all the time.
Much love to you all — Ashki sends more leaning hugs :)

Awe Tamara, I know what you mean about not wanting to move. Sadie follows me everywhere too, still. My husband says she’s the most insecure dog he’s ever seen. But I tell him it’s out of love (right).
When she was very ill, I did the same thing – just sat with her so she wouldn’t move. I got nothing done and day would get by me. She still follows me, but as she’s doing pretty good, I am leaving her for hours at a time, as I feel she needs to get to where she was, secure wise, prior to the illness. She was really scared at the onset. She turned pretty antisocial with other dogs – not mean – just wanted to be left alone. She’s getting better and better.
Tamara, this forum gave me such wonderful advise on so many issues with Sadie, but they also encouraged me to take care of myself. I pass this advice on to you – try to rest, try very hard not to dwell on what might happen and try very hard to get out some for some ‘free’ time, even for an hour or so. You need to take care of yourself for you but also because Ashki needs a healthy fur mom to continue to care for him.
That’s great news that his PCV is stable at 20. Yes, indeed, we’ll take that. Here’s hoping the great news continues. You certainly are doing all the right things, that’s for sure! You continually amaze me with your prompt actions for Ashki and learning capability about this illness. You run rings around me and I’ve been dealing with it for a year and a half!
Keep up the great team work Tamara and Ashki! Love and huge hugs, Linda & Sadie
