- Adding Sam E and milk thistle?
Hi Haylee, I’m so sorry, I have somehow missed your message and only seen it now.
I’ve very sorry to hear about your little boy. How is he going?
I honestly don’t know anything about liver problems, but Dr Jean Dodds has a liver cleansing diet which many of us have used for our dogs because the drugs cause such an overload on the liver. You’ll find it on this page – its the first item:
https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/nutrition-resources
There is a drug also used which helps the liver to recover called Denamarin, but again that is used by our dogs who have been diagnosed with AIHA, so I’m not really sure this is appropriate for your boy.
My very best, Vally
I have a ten pound Bolognese with high liver enzymes. She has had an ultrasound and her organs are in great condition. Her vet put her on a med with Sam E and Milk Thistle which I cannot get down her feisty little self. I have had her all of her 10 years and this is the first time I cannot get a pill down. I’ve tried everything this–believe me. I am trying to find a med that is in liquid form that I can put down her throat via a dropper. Any suggestions?

This is my first time contacting you.
Hi Pat. Would the drug be Denamarin? That is great great stuff for high liver enzymes. Should be given an hour away from other food and meds. Although it can be given with a little bit of food if necessary.
Now as to your question. I used to push this down Bingo’s throat, but he was such a good pill taker, I was lucky.
How have you been trying to give it to your feisty girl? The shove method? Are you in the US? I believe the chewable version is available. Does your girl tend to go for chewables?
Vally
Hi Pat. Okay, Vally and Patrice, can I pipe in? 😉
Sadie was 25 pounds.
I gave Sadie HerbPharm (liquid) milk thistle. It was the only one when I started, but there are many out there now. It was a tenure with alcohol, but some now have low alcohol. I gave Sadie 20 drops of the milk thistle twice a day, IN her food.
For SAMe, I used CellFood SAMe, liquid. I gave Sadie 10 drops of SAMe twice a day, IN her food.
Her liver values, up until we lost her three weeks ago, were perfect except for her ALP, which was always off the chart, but prednisone induced, as she was in a maintenance prednisone dose for life.
In her last year, I did give her Nutramax’s Marin, Plus chewable (Sadie loved them, like a treat), which I gave right after her breakfast and supper (twice a day) and stayed with the CellFood SAMe IN her food, twice a day.
Sadie did not decline because of AIHA. They said a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) in her left leg. Very aggressive. I say a blood clot. No education her to justify that, just a gut feeling and her symptoms. Either way, the prognosis was poor and she was in so much pain.
Sadie fought for over seven years. She had six relapses. Her onset was a comedy of errors with weaning which set her up for all future issues. With each relapse, she would be back on the high immune suppressants, would wean SLOW, and she would rebound, bless her little heart. With the six relapses, she was unique and her life was not normal. But she was a happy, sweet girl. And, most important she was an AIHA warrior and survivor. 💗
Hi, my Doberman, Brittany weighs 68lbs and has been on Denamarin for for large dogs, 1 tablet once a day . Since Denamarin is a combo of Sam-e and Milk Thistle I’d like to give Milk Thistle every other day with Denamarin in between. The dosage for the Milk Thistle on the Denamarin box is 120 mg . I have found one manufacturer very reputable which has this dosage. What are your thoughts on this?
Sincerely,
Kathy
Hi Kathy, Sorry a bit slow, computer issues yesterday.
I guess is depends on why your dog is taking Denamarin. If for a serious liver issues, then I would stick with Denamarin until liver function is good. If your dog is doing well, then, you could certainly try doing it your way. Have a look at Mary Straus’s Dog Aware site. Here’s the link on liver issues:

Jean Dodds’ recommendation is for a 68lb dog, 50% of human dosage. See

SAMe is also very good for liver disease and other stuff, including mental decline, so I opted to continue using it for life on my boy Bingo.
