- 8 yr old Rat Terrier Lucy
On day six of battling this horrible and unexpected disease with our 8 yr old rat terrier, Lucy. Seemed off for a day – took her in and she went straight to the Specialty Vet center. She’s spent 5 days as a patient there. Her levels would stay in the low 20’s – and then plummet to 16-18. She had transfusion Saturday and stayed back up at 25 for 36 hours. Yesterday, expecting to bring her home, she went down to 18. We did one more transfusion which brought her to 20 last night. Today she is home with all of us, she’s on all oral meds and not looking great. Hoping that she can just rest and recover and not plummet. It’s so hard seeing her so sleepy and quiet.
Keeping you and Lucy in my thoughts. I know how scary it can be, you feel like you should be doing something for them but just can’t make it go away. I hope you have a peaceful night with her, as best you can. Please let us know how she is doing!

Hi Lucy’s mum/dad. The first days are the absolutely most horrific and terrifying. The reality is that they will look worse before they can improve and it can take a little while.
Please let us know how Lucy is going. I noticed that Patrice has posted for you, but please know that you are very welcome here.
My very best,
Vally & Bingo (diag Nov 2011 in remission)
Hang on! I agree with Vally, ths first days are definitively the worst, and certainly hard on the nerves. I know how stressful this is. Lots of love and positive thought sent in your direction.

Hello dear Lucy’s family
I’m so sorry to hear Lucy has had a rough time. As everyone has said, this is terrifying when it first happens & they look so poorly. With the right drug treatment, AIHA can be beaten, so you must keep up hope. Please know we are all here to support you – we all understand how awful this disease is – anything we can do to help you (looking at blood tests, medications etc), just ask.
Love Sheena, Worzel (diagnosed Dec 2012, in remission) & Ollie too xxx
Vally is so right. The first several weeks are so terrifying. When I first took Dunes to the special vet hospital, her HCT was 7. I remember the vet could not believe she was sitting let alone jumping in and out of the car.
I cried so much. She had 3 transfusions in two weeks. But she lived 5 more years.

I’m really sorry to hear that Lucy has been diagnosed with this horrible disease. As others have said, there is hope with the right treatment and several members here have pups who have recovered. All of us have been through this and understand how awfully difficult it is. Please feel free to ask anything and we will try our best to answer.
Much love, Mary and Mable x
