Amy,
Look at the vaccine resources on this page:
https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/vaccine-resources/
Look for Dr. Dodds minimal vaccination schedule and Canine Non Core vaccinations. Click on pictures to go to those pages. Print this information and keep it with you whenever you go to any vet’s office.
Follow her advice on these topics and you will be safe.
my best

Hi Amy
I agree – use Dr Dodds schedule. I have dropped Ollie’s vaccinations to her recommendations after reading that in the past. I also think Worzel was sent over the edge into bone marrow failure after being a bit under the weather (we didn’t know obviously at the time how bad he was) & having a vaccination. Disastrous – the vets shouldn’t have done it & I shouldn’t have let them, but that’s history, it happened. Still haven’t forgiven myself.
Sounding very exciting – puppies – lovely! Coal will get a taste of her own medicine from a new addition – hee hee! And what brilliant news on her bloodwork – well done, cheeky Coal. You are doing one amazing job, Amy, you really are.
Love from us all

God Bless Patrice! Thank you for always being the fountain of information we all need! Links galore! Thank you Sheena. I am doing my best to make sure my sassy girl is well and stays that way for ever and ever! No relapses no more IMHA!! This Momma has had enough. As far as forgiving yourself please do! No one is perfect and no matter if we are parenting children or pets we all make mistakes. That is why accidents are called accidents! Worzel has long forgiven you. You should try it! :)
xoxo
Amy and Coal
She’s sooooooo funny – and so beautiful! Can I see something pink on her hair? Or is it on the grass behind? Either way, I don’t think she is a pink bow girl – too sassy for that!

That is her pink bunny that she adores! Its dirty and smelly and she loves it to death! :) She is not a pink girl at all. As a matter of fact we have all decided her color is red. The family all agrees! :)
I just wanted to give you all an update on the new puppy and the breeder. I sent her Dr. Dodds vax schedule and information about IMHA. I asked her to please consider not vaccinating the puppy before it leaves her home at 8 weeks and that I would be diligent in making sure this puppy was fully covered by all the vaccines that are necessary. She sent me a letter stating that she would discuss it with her vet. This is the conversation that has taken place thus far….
My e-mail to Joan after she responded to my information she was sent:
Thank you for taking the time to read the information I sent to you. I appreciate you taking my concerns into consideration. As you know I am a diligent dog parent and I can assure you that this puppy will be well protected. If it would make you feel better I am willing to pay for a titer to be done of our puppy before it leaves your home so you know exactly what she is protected against before leaving your home. I do not mind signing something stating that you are not responsible for any illness related to vaccinations. If I must forgo all my guarantee I will do so. I feel strongly that this is the best for our puppy and will allow her to live a long and healthy life with out risk of any disease.
Again thank you so much for taking the time to go over everything I sent you and your timely response. We are getting very excited to meet our new sweet girl (Leia) which ever pup she may be! :)
Warmly,
Amy
Reply from Joan:
I talked to my vet/breeder and does not agree with this form of vaccination. For one thing they are only covered for distemper and parvo and then rabies, nothing else????? Sounds very unsafe to me, but if want to pay for a titer I will do it on your puppy if that makes you happy.
My reply back:
I want you to be assured that the puppy is protected. If you do not feel it is necessary for your peace of mind I am fine with out it. I spoke to my vet and she is fine with us brining home the puppy with out being vaccinated which would be my preference. As I stated if you want to assure that the puppy is safe from Distemper and Parvo before leaving your home I will willingly pay for the titer to ease your worry.
Unfortunately most western and non holistic veterinarians do not agree with this form of vaccination. They don’t often see cases of immune crisis and they don’t often see vaccination injury. So I am not surprised by your vets opposition. She is welcome to speak to my vet if she so desires. This puppy will eventually have all of its vaccinations because with out them they could carry something that could literally kill Coal as she is never allowed to be vaccinated again for the rest of her life. We just want to do it very very slowly to avoid this same thing happening that happened to Coal. Safety of our dogs ( ALL OF THEM) is our first priority.
Let me know if you want the titer done for your peace of mind. I do not feel it is necessary for me. I am willing to pay for it if that is what you wish.
Thanks again
Amy
From Joan:
According to the article, the puppy would never be vaccinated for heptitis or Lepto or parainfluenza?
They stopped vaccinating for Lepto several years ago(I did not) and they had an outbreak in Long Island…….
What would the titer be for? Just distemper and parvo?
my reply:
The puppy will get all of those vaccines but it will be done over a longer period of time. We are most concerned about the distemper and parvo in the beginning. The lepto hepatitis and parainfluenza (all which Coal had too early) will be done much much later in her lifetime but are necessary because of Coals condition. This puppy will be fully vaccinated eventually. The shot schedule Dr. Dodds and Dr. Shultz recommend are made around a typical dog where as our new puppy has to have immunities because we have a medically fragile dog in the house already.
The titer would be for distemper and parvo which is the most important of the immunities for the puppy to have when leaving your home. I have also been assured that the chance of the puppy getting distemper or Parvo going from one clean home ( yours) where the dogs are properly vaccinated adults to another clean home (mine) where the other adult dog ( Vidia) is properly vaccinated is less than 1%. My vet said she would feel differently if this puppy was coming from a puppy mill or a shelter of some sort and if the puppy had to be “shipped” to its new home and not picked up by me. She feel 100% positive that not only will the puppy be protected still at 8 weeks from its mothers immunities but will not be exposed to distemper or parvo in my home or around my dogs.
Please understand that this is just precautionary on our part as we are a little gun shy after being put through hell with Coals sickness. It is still an everyday situation and the steroids and medical bills have added up to more than 7 thousand dollars. By delaying vaccination in this puppy we lower the risk of this ever happening again to almost zero. I know this is a lot to take in and I know it is not what you are used to. I am asking that you trust that I have done all of my research. I have conferenced with Dr. Dodds over the phone and e-mail. I have my vet who is on board with all of this. We also have a nutritionist for Coal as well. Many hours on my part have been spent doing everything medically, nutritionally and emotionally to keep Coal healthy and happy and give her the best chance at a long life.
As I had suggested previously I am more than happy to have the titer done for the puppy if it would ease your worry. You still have some time to think about it. I want to proceed in a manner that allows the least amount of stress for you me and our new pup.
Warmly,
Amy
So this is where we stand and I am ready to scream. What else can I do to reassure her that this puppy will be ok? Seriously I am not just talking out the side of my mouth here and asking something so crazy of her. I have sent her all the research on puppy shots from Dr. Shultz I have sent her the info on IMHA and I have sent her Dr. Dodds vaccination protocol. She has no concept of how shell shocked we are and how nervous we are to have this happen again. Sorry for the long vent I know you all don’t really have the answers I just needed to put it all out there.
Thanks for listening and getting through this long post.
XO,
Amy
