I’m wondering if there is increased inflammation in his kidneys due to the additional protein, as it looks like he’s dumping more protein in his urine just based on increased foaminess.
The first things we talked about at the vet were adding one of the following: leukeran, aza, cyclophosphamide, or leflunomide. Possibly trying one application of EPO, but canine is no longer available, only human. The risk of developing antigens to it is low with only one application, but goes up as you use it more (as in kidney failure).
I brought up anabolic steroids and need to look more into that; the vet mentioned one product when I brought it up that is commonly used but again bad side effects. I read an article today that mentioned several different products, I need to look at that again and look up each of them. I went back and looked at my notes from Dr. Dodds and she doesn’t specify a drug, just the general term anabolic steroids.
Ashki is feeling pretty well though his gums are looking less pink than they were a few days ago. He’s always tired on the days we go to the vets as he is a crazy man there, jumping all over everyone and trying to get them to feed him. He was successful today, his nurse brought him a bowl of chicken! So his lunch was a little smaller than usual.

Ashki perked up later this afternoon and his gums were nice and pink! Sigh. You are right Vally, what is he doing???

I’m going to take him Friday. I’ll talk to the vet tomorrow and get CBC. I forgot to ask her if we would get pathology but I know she can order it after the fact. Perhaps Friday but latest next week we’ll get UPC again.
The conspiracy might send me over the edge.

Hi Tamara
Oh, that lovely boy is certainly giving you the run around! It’s good to see your vet is thinking carefully about all the alternatives. I didn’t know you couldn’t get doggy EPO there any more – we have never had it in Europe. I do know that some horrible greyhound racing people use it – I imagine it must be an illegal source then?
I have sent you some links that you asked for – I hope they will help.
Hoping for better results tomorrow – nice pink gums is always a cheery sign!
Love & cuddles to you & dear Ashki

Ashki is feeling very well this morning, carrying his duckie around and rolling the dirt, gums nice and pink. I am really hoping this was a scary blip, though I have already started reducing his protein. I so hope it is that simple.
Sheena, thank you for the links! I wonder if the greyhound people get it from researchers? I’ve noticed that there are tests you can get for research but not for clinical use as I’m doing my googling for this or that.
love to you all —
