Hello Ladies,
Good idea, I will email Dr. Dodds today to check in with her about the Heartguard medication.
Good news, Frank’s PCV level went up to 25% today. I am such a happy mommy. But with good news there is always a something that rains on the parade. His platelets are still low. My vet will do another blood workup on Monday and she will check his platelets once more. She believes that what she is seeing is Evan’s Syndrome? Have you heard of this? Is is treated with the same medication?
Oh, and I cried once more at the vet. A sweet guardian angel (vet wouldn’t tell me who) paid for Frank’s visit today. I was so shocked when they told me that my bill for the day was paid off. People are amazing.
Thank you ladies for your words of wisdom. They are a comfort to me at this time.
With much love,
The Gonzalez-Borg Pack
Hi Wendy
This is wonderful news! More happy dancing!
Yes – we have seen a few cases of Evan’s Syndrome here. My understanding is that treatment is the same, so lets hope Frank’s platelets will soon start to come up too. Do you know if there has been any change in the platelets yet? We had a lady called Ruth and her dog Nula, who recovered from Evans. If you search back in the forum, you’ll find her story.
That’s so lovely that someone paid for Frank’s visit. There are some really decent people in this world. Sometimes I feel as though I’m losing faith in humanity, and when I come to this site and talk with people who love animals, it’s instantly restored. I don’t know who paid for Frank, but whoever it was is awesome, and obviously thinks a lot of you and Frank.
Things are going in the right direction. Big hugs for you and Frank,
Mary and Mable x
Hi Wendy,
yes we have heard of Evan’s syndrome, it is basically treated the same as AIHA or ITP would be treated separately. Evan’s is treatable and there is certainly no reason to give up. What has been done so far is right for both diseases.
Best wishes,
Brigitte
You live in a wonderful community! Things like someone paying for your bill today sure shows us that there are so many wonderful people in this world.
PS. Dr. Dodds wrote an article about Heartworm prevention:

If you go to the AIHA terms at the top of the page you find an explanation for Evan’s syndrome.
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Hi Wendy
I did tell you I thought it was Evans Syndrome early on, but I bet you were so overwhelmed that you didn’t really take everything in – quite understandable (see my post on page 5 from the 18th July) – don’t worry – the treatment is the same, although sometimes Vincristine is used in addition to cyclosporine in Dr Dodds protocol. We have had quite a few cases on here, as everyone has mentioned & some have been given Vincristine too. Hopefully, Frank will continue to respond to the cyclosporine well & it won’t be necessary to add anything else though.
I’m so happy his PCV has gone up – that’s really cheerful news. You just need to keep an eye on his platelets though. The last blood tests I saw, they weren’t too bad – nowhere near being dangerously low.
How lovely that someone helped you with the vets bill – there really are some great people around!
So things are looking better all the time – fingers crossed for Frank to carry on going up & up.
Love & hugs

Hello ladies,
Frank threw up for the first time today. Is this normal? Should I try to get something for his upset something? We have been doing so well that the small things like this make me worry me so much.
Respectfully,
Wendy

These drugs are very hard on their tummies. If it is a one-off, don’t worry. Obviously, if it carries on, you need to see the vet immediately as Frank cannot afford to throw up his medications & you mustn’t let him get dehydrated either. There are medications such as Cerenia or metoclopramide which can help with nausea/vomiting. It is not unusual for high (loading) dose cyclosporine to make them throw up. This resolves when you lower the dose. Have good read of this please:
https://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/AIHA_Terms/cyclosporine/
Paragraph 5 explains about nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea.
Please don’t worry too much as this is easily remedied – I think this has happened to most of us – and yes, of course we worried too!
