Whole blood is collected directly from a donor animal for transfusions. It can be used in this natural state when it is freshly collected or for up to 24 hours if refrigerated. It supplies red blood cells, coagulation factors and some white cells and platelets. It can be used in either acute and chronic anemia but is used most often for special acute needs such as replacement of platelets and coagulation factors or massive loss of blood.
