Sucralfate (brand name Carafate) is used orally for treatment & prevention of ulcers in the oesophagus, stomach, intestines & mouth. It is extremely useful during treatment for AIHA to prevent ulceration which can be caused by the drugs (e.g. immuno-suppressants, antiobiotics, ultra low-dose aspirin etc) and to allow any existing ulceration to heal.
Sucralfate is an aluminium based compound which attaches itself to proteins which are produced by ulcers (in the gastro-intestinal tract) & forms a protective coating or barrier, preventing further damage from stomach acid etc & so promotes healing. This is sometimes called the “bandage effect”.
Dosage: Sucralfate is normally supplied in 1 G tablets, half to one tablet up to 3 times per day according to the size /weight of dog, as advised by your veterinarian. Sucralfate is also available in suspension (liquid). NEVER double dose as it could be toxic to your dog.
Sucralfate must given APART from other medications as it may prevent their proper absorption. 2 hours before or 2 hours after other medications and /or food is very important. It must be given on an empty stomach. A dose last thing at night has good effect.
Possible interactions with other drugs include: Digoxin, Famotidine, Cemetidine, Phenytoin, Tetracycline & Fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Use with caution for pregnant females.
Possible side effects include: Constipation, allergic reaction (extreme allergic reaction: facial swelling, hives, itching, sudden diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma).
Sucralfate is not recommended for long-term use as it can cause a build up of aluminium in the body, causing bone weakness and can accumulate in the brain. Follow the advice of your vet.
