Staphylococcus bacteria can cause a staph infection on the skin of dogs taking high dose immunosuppressant drugs such as prednisone.
Staph bacteria normally reside on the skin of animals and humans without causing any problem. Healthy dogs are able to control this population easily. But a suppressed immune system is unable to do that.
There are two type of staph lesions: A red area on the skin with a pimple-like pustule in the center. The other is a circular, reddish area with a crusty edge and hair loss in the center.
Signs of Staph Infection
- Red, irritated skin
- Blisters
- Skin lesions
- Hair falling out
- Discolored skin
- Crusty skin
A skin swab will confirm if it is a staph infection and an antibiotic sensitivity test is done to find the best antibiotic. Topical treatments can also be helpful.
Staph bacteria can be transmitted easily from pet to pet and in some cases from pet to human. This infection can be found in any breed and age of dog.

Keep the wound clean to prevent the staph bacteria from spreading. Because this type of bacteria is opportunistic, and can be passed to both animals and humans, special care must be taken when handling your dog and cleaning wounds. Wash your hands before and after touching your dog. Dispose or carefully wash infected dressings and towels. Contaminated dog toys and bedding should be disinfected or replaced.
