Reticulocytes are immature or “baby” red blood cells which are made in the bone marrow. They are slightly larger than mature RBC. CBC values of reticulocytes in healthy dogs are 60,000 absolute and 1%. The bone marrow responds to anemia (a need for more oxygen to the body cells) by producing extra reticulocytes (reticulocytosis). They can be measured by a CBC using a sample of circulating blood.
Reticulocytes are an important diagnostic measurement in evaluating AIHA and non-regenerative anemia. Reticulocyte values should normally increase in anemic dogs, and the anemia is considered regenerative. If the bone marrow does not respond properly, the anemia is considered non-regenerative . This may indicate some level of bone marrow suppression or failure and further tests may be required.
