Packed red blood cells are a concentration of red blood cells in a small amount of plasma that is obtained by centrifuging whole blood. They are mixed with an anticoagulant and storage solution. They provide red blood cells for anemic animals that need more oxygen to the body cells. Packed cells can be used immediately or refrigerated. They must be diluted in a sterile solution for use.
