ITP Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura is a platelet disease where antibodies bind to the platelets and are then attacked by macrophages. These white blood cells are the protectors of our immune system but they can become confused and attack “self.” Often there is no known cause. ITP occurs twice as often in female dogs as male dogs. Treatment consists of high dose immunosuppressive drugs such as prednisone.
