Dexamethasone (brand name dexasone) is a synthetic corticosteroid drug, which is many times more potent than prednisone. Injectable dexamethasone is often used in the treatment of AIHA at the early stages if the case is acute (severe & fast onset). Patients normally will be changed onto prednisone (orally) instead after the initial crisis stage has passed.
Other uses for dexamethasone include treatment for some cancers, some neurological diseases, allergic reactions including asthma, hives, itching, some inflammatory diseases, skin & eye problems. In emergency siuations it is used in high doses for anaphalaxis, shock & spinal cord trauma.
